DUNEDIN NOTES.

[from our correspondent.] The annual meeeting of the members of the Tuapeka Jockey Club was to have been held on Thursday, but as Tapanui Race? were coining off on that day an adjournment for a week was agreed to. Only bare results of the Tapanui meeting are so far to hand. The Maiden Plate was won by Mr Humfries , The Waif; the Grand Stand Handicap and Spring Handicap by Mr Poole's Evening Star, with Camerine second in each instance; the Trotting Handicap by Mr Craig's No Use; and the Selling Race by Charlie. The privileges for the Taieri meeting on November 9th realised a shade over £100 at auction on Saturday, as against £8* last year. This gathering is becoming one of the most popular in the Otago district, outside Dunedin, and although it is held when all our sporting magnates are attending the Christchurch spring meeting, the scene of action lies so handy to town that the citizens find their way there in great force. Handicaps for the Maniototo races on the same day have been framed as follows :— Members' Handicap.—Chester 9st, Disappointment Bst 51b, Hinda Bst, Marjory Moore 7st 71b, Princess Alice 7st3lb, Fable 7st, Amuri 6st 101b, Maria 6st 71b. Fuller details than I sent you last week of the Lowburn Races, have now reached us, and from them I gather that the weather was fine, but blowy—and wind up in that quarter means dust in abundance. For the Maiden Plate, won by Mr J. McElligott's Wave, there were six starters, but the first named won pretty easily. Mr J. Bigging's Plunger was second. Sir W. Wilson's Eleanor third. The winner paid a dividend of £3 3s. There was a capital struggle for the Lowburn Cup of 30sovs, Mr J. Condon's Windsor (Set 41b) winning by only a neck from Mr C. Huddlcstone s Bagshot (Bst 81b), with Mr Condon's Brunette (7st 31b) third. Mokoia <Bat) and Walnut (7st) also ran. Dividend, £1 13s. In the Trot, Mr C. G. Mountney's Black Bess (45sec) beat Mr J. Keith's Sultan (25sec), Mr R. Old's Kilawara (oOdec), and a couple more with great ease, and paid a dividend of £fl 11s. E'our youngsters turned out for the .Lowburn Derby, and a good thing was spotted in Mr J. River's br g Avis, a son of Le Xioup and Tui, who won with a lot in hand, and paid no more than 7s profit on £1 invested. Mr E. Nutter's filly, Bracelet, by Amulet—Scud mare, ran second, Mr J. Hyde's gr g Canue, by Laertes—Sultan mare, third, and Mr J. Chapman's b g Protection, by Dead Heat—Messenger mare, last. In the Sporting Club Handicap Bagshot (9st lib) furnished a surprise by beating Windsor t°3t), Don Jose (7st 31b) Amulet (7st 81b), and Trimolite (6st). In this race the dividend of the day, £10 8s was paid. The last event on the card supplied a dead heat between Tarragon and Paddy, out of five starters, and in the run ofit Tarragon proved victorious. The Cromwell Jockey Club made a profit of £25 over their recent Spring Meeting. They will pive £400 in stakes at their summer gathering on December 26th and 29th. The Clinton race programme for January has been passed by the Dunedin Jockey Club. S. G. Smith's brood mare Lass o* the Hill has a colt foal to Fusilier, and goes to Le Loup. This mare is highly bred, being full sister to Neckersgat. Wanaka races were held on Thursday and Friday last, bat from that far up country district only the bare results are to hand. The opening event on the programme was won by Patterson's Wildboy; the Publicans' Handicap was won by Condon's Windsor (9st), with Don Jose (9st second, and Blackboy (7st 121b) third. Trotting Race was won by Fancy from scratch, and in the Consolation Viking gob a winning turn. Some fair dividends were paid during the two days. Windsor proving remunerative each time ho ran, while in the closing Race Viking gave his supporters returns of £1218s. No betting transactions of importance to report this week, but Lochiel remains a warm favourite at 3 to 1, while Chain bhot and Silvermark are often enquired after, Lorraine's short price is purely fictitious for no one touches him. The doubt as to which will represent Robinson's stable has made a few people ask after Kxchange who has had a few wagers booked to his name during the last few days. St. Clair has receded since his recent mishap. Quotations are tvs follows :—N.Z. Cup.—3 to 1 against Lochiel, 4 to 1 Lorraine, t> to 1 Chain Shot and Silvermark, 8 to 1 Exehango and Leopold, 10 to 1 St. Clair, Ruby, Engagement, Phormium Tenax, 100 to 12 Son of a Gun, Manton.
