CHRISTCHURCH FIRE BRIGADE.

The quarterly meeting of the Christchurch Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the Library, Chester street, last night. Mr Superintendent Turton occupied the chair. There was a good attendance of members. Among the business disposed of was the reading of letters from Messrs Carl and Amyes, enclosing cheques for £5 each, and thanking the Brigade for the services it rendered in saving the Al Hotel from flre. It was decided to write to his Worship the Mayor, asking for the annual donation of £10 from the City Council towards the Brigade Library Fund, and Sub Superintendent Smith, Fireman W. B. Hobbs, and Foreman Cow were appointed to wait on the Fire Insurance Association on a similar matter. Branchman Taylor was elected Acting Foreman to the Extinguisher, and Fireman Taylor was , appointed Branchman of the same engine. The meeting took, exception to the remarks made by Councillor Hulbert that the Brigade was late in arriving at Hobday's flre, as they considered such remarks were uncalled for, the distance the , horses were from the station being the cause of the delay. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr Superintendent Harris especially, and to the ex-members and others who had assisted at Hobday's fire. Mr Supt. Ashley had forwarded a photo of the Railway Brigade as a donation to the library. It was acknowledged with thanks. Mr Harris waited on the Brigade, and informed them that he had been appointed a Fire Inspector for the City He had not yet accepted the appointment, as two matters had weighed with him. One was whether or not the Brigade approved of the appointment. He would say that' he might be of some service to the Brigade in the capacity of Fire Inspector, oat he should not accept without their full concurrence. The members unanimously approved of the appointment, after which various matters were talked over, and the meeting adjourned.
