SCULLING MATCH.

[Br Electric Telegraph—Copyright.] [per press association.! Received October 6th, 1.5 a.m. SYDNEY, October 5. At Newcastle to-day Searle beat Hughes. Time, 22min lOsec. The details of the race had not been settled when the last mail left. It was understood, however, that it was to be for £100 aside, and that Searle was to give Hughes a start. Concerning Searle, an Australian contemporary of September 2iind says:—" Henry Searle of the Clarence River h«*s placed himself in the very first rank of Australian scullers by his easy victory over Chris. Neilsen last Friday, 14th inst. Neilsen appears to have been beaten after the first quarter of a mile, for which distance the pace was a ci-acker. Eleven strokes were taken by each sculler in the first fifteen seconds —44 strokes per minute, but this was not kept up long, nor was it needed by Searle. He spurted Jiway from NeiLson whenever he liked, anu won by five lengths in 21min 34isec. Searle is really a young wonder, aud must within a year or two be a formidable rival to Kemp. Already an offer has been made to back him against Hanlan, and it is not unlikely that a match will be made between them after the champion race has been rowed. Searle is remarkably strong and active for his weight—list 61b—but he has a fault of rowing with a bentiright arm, which will tell against his staying powers when he may find an opponent to pace with him.
