THE CATHEDRAL SPIRE.

Our readers will be glad to learn that the spire will soon be restored. The Chapter have had the matter under consideration almost since the accident took place. They referred the question of the manner iv which the spire was to be restored to Messrs Mountfort and Dobson* who have submitted a proposal which has been accepted by the Chapter. The new spire will be erected in stone, but the masonry will not be of the massive character of the portion which was destroyed by the earthquake. Thecross which will take the place of the former one, will also be much lighter in character, while > from an artistic point of view, the spire will be equally as attractive as before. Devices will be adopted which, it is to be hoped, will cause the spire to resist any shock that is ever likely to occur here.
