Bomilly, C.M.G., formerly Deputy High Commissioner of the Western Pacific and High Commissioner of New Guinea, has been appointed British Consul at the New Hebrides. London, July 12. Sir Graham Berry has decided not to float the Melbourne Harbor Board quarter-million loan -before October. It is reported that the Marquis of Normanby succeeds Sir Wm.Bobinson as Governor of South Australia. Sara Bernhardt states that she will visit Australia ha 1889. In the House of Commons Sir John Gorst denied there ..had been undue delay on ithe ■ part of the Imperial Government in replying to the telegram from Sir H. Parked in March last on the Chinese questibii. On the other haud, he thought Lord Kuutsford had displayed great promptitude in dealing with the question. Received July 19th, 11 p.m. London, July 11. The fishery exhibits for the Melbourne Exhibition show a fair prospect of being a success.
The Marquis of Salisbury, replying to the Parliamentary Colonisation Committee, refused to grant a sum of money for the assistance of emigration, and advised tbe Committee to obtain engagements from the colonies. Received July 20th, 1.30 p.m.
London, July 12. Arrangements have been successfully completed for building a railway from Perth'to Eucla in Western Australia on the land grant system. The line is to be finished in two years..
The St. James' Gazette recommends that responsible "Government should be granted to Western Australia, but that the area of the colony should be limited.
Received July 20th, 1.30 a.m. London, July 13. Sir Julius Vogel, on behalf of the New Zealand Government, is making inquiries as to the processes in vogu in England and Germany of dealing with refractory ores.
