THE NEW MAORI MEMBER.
By Tei-egkaph.]
[KItOM OUR CORRESPONDENT."! NAPIER, September 9. The return of Mr Carroll against Mr Wi Pere for the Eastern Maori seat has been receiverf with general satisfaction here. Practice !;,- it gives another European member anxious to see the Maori lands profitably occupied in the place of Wi Pere, a Maori of Maoris, who is opposed to any dealings in Native lands. The contest mainly ' turned on this point, Wi Pere sup- \ porting the Government on the ground that tie Native Lands Administration Act stopped dealings in Native lands, while Carroll warmly opposed the Act. Wi Pere received strong sup
port from the East Cape Natives, out in all the more settled parts of the country Carroll had a large majority, showing that Natives who have lived more among Europeans, and who are more educated and intelligent, are almost unanimous in condemning Mr Ballanee's Native policy, especially in regard to their land. Uarroll's majority would have been much larger had not Warbrick been standing professedly as a Government supporter, though opposed to the principal features of the Land Administration Act. Carroll is well educated, a thorough master of English, and an effective spea~ker. He has been an interpreter in the House. Ha stood at the last election, when Wi Pere easily defeated him. He is a warm supporter of Mr Ormond. [press association telegrams.J OAMARU. September 9. Sir R. Stout addressed a large public meeting in Oamaru to-night. He dealt with the same subjects as he has treated of at other places. At the conclusion of the address a nnmber of questions were asked. He received a unanimous vote of thanks. NAPIER, September I>. Mr Desmond, a candidate for Hawke's Bay, addressed a large meeting at Hastings last night. His speech was a long tirade against the land holders, and an advocacy of " expropriation" of large estates. At the close, he moved a long resolution which virtually expressed approval of his policy and of himself as a candidate, but only about twenty voted for it, and two hundred against it. A majority of those present evidently regarded his candidature as a joke. AUCKLAND, September 9. Mr H. R. Jury has retired from the contest for the Newton seat in favor of Mr rtole.
