CHRISTCHURCH SOUTH ELECTION.

TO THE EDITOR OF THK PRESS. Sir. —To put it mildly, there is evidently a misunderstanding between Mr Ayers and Mr Perceval regarding their interview of the 18th .luly. _m.s one of your correspondents (" Out and About") grammatically inquires " Whom of the two are speaking the truth "?—a query which does not appear likely to be satisfactorily answered. Mr Avers, with much circumstance, has given his version, at the same time writing of Mr Perceval with Peeksniffian condescension as " one whom I like and esteem so much," and "my valued friend," &c. ; but with the firm resolution ] not to desert those friends in whose hearts he holds "so warm a place." Mr Perceval, on the other hand, is far too much of a gentleman to give the lie direct to his rival's account of the interview, and regarding it as unnecessary or injudicious to furnish his own version, disagrees in toto with Mr Ayers' account. And so matters rest. But this pretty little quarrel is instructive, and shouid teach i all independent or hesitating voters to j have nothing to do' with either of these wrangling candidates, but to support a I man who is incapable of either political orpersenal trickery, -who has no personal vanity to gratify, and no ambition to seek, ■beyond doing his best to promote aed the prosperity of New Zealand and the welfare of his fellow-citizens. Such a candidate is undoubtedly Mr H. Thomson —a man of good position and repute in the city, who is involved in no petty squabbles, and who enjoys the eminent advantage •■* 1 a parliamentary experience possessed by { no other caa.lidate for the vacant seat.— Yours, &c. An Ixuki'knkknt Elector, i Sfprtrnber ."itii. '
