MYSTERIOUS DEATH.
Yesterday the police received information that the body of & man had been found floating in the River Heathoote, near the Steam Wharf, Woolstoa. On making inquiries we learned that the body was first seen by a boy named Alfred Eaneey, who gave the information. Sergeant Cullen and Constable Johnstone took the body out of the water, and removed it to the Wharf Hotel, where it now lies. It is that of a man abcut five feet seven or eight in height, stoat in build. There ia a short beard, thin side whiskers and moustache on the face, light brows in color, with hair of theaame shade. The man is dressed in a black cloth morning ooat, and vest of the same material, dark grey tweed trousers, striped woollen or Crimean shirt, and pair of water-tight boots, newly soled and heeled. The body is apparently that of a laboring man, of about thirty-five or thirty-seven years of age. In the pockets were found Is 9d in silver and several smaller articles, but nothing by whioh to identify him. Where the man eime from, or how he got into the river, is at present a mystery, as he is not known to anyone who has seen the body. Judging from its appearance, the body has been some days in the water. Inquiries were made in the district yesterday by C instable Johnstone, but no information re girding the man’s identity was obtainable, iAn inquest will be held at 10 o’clock this morning.
