MELBOURNE, September 8.
Mr W. J. O'Donnell, the explorer, has sent a letter t. the Government resident at Palmer-ton, declaring that the belief that a man with _»1000 worth of gold has been seen near Forest Biver, Kimberley, has no foundation in fact. He adds that hundreds of people are returning disappointed, and much distress exists. Horses are selling far j-5, and pack^s— ddlea are given away. A telegram trom Cooktown states that the steamer Sikh brino. seventy-nine returning diggers from Kimberley for all ports. The diggers give a fearful account of the digging- On the afternoon the Sikh left _*_rt Darwin the Menmuir waa coming in with 200 dingers from Cambridge Gulf, who were to await the next steamer to come south.
