r nu_ associatiou -_x_m_ax._ ■* DUNEDIN, September 13. Frequent showers fell during the d_v and made the Carisbrook ground much grpasier than on Saturday for the second match against New South Wales. The attendance was very fair. Just as the team arrived on the ground the sun shone out beautifully, but rain fell twice. _, fair breeze was blowing from the South, west, of which the Blues had thedisad, vantage in the first and the Beds in __ second spell. Shaw kicked off At the very outset the Bloei showed their superiority, steadily working the ball down into the visitors' territory, ___ Colquhoun relieving them by a good run a series of scrums followed, carried c rery time by the Blues, who eventually forced their opponents down. Play waa soon back again in the visitors' twenty - fives, but Wiaeheart, McArthur and Shaw relieved their eid.ee and carried the play to the Otago side of the centre flag. Long passing again lost Sydney a lot of ground. Marsh, NoeL and others gradually worked the play back again, Hope had a shot at goal, but the ball never rose. Scrums and short runs followed, Shaw doing a lot of work and the visitors more than held their own for some time. McArthur and Cairdß-Owed-up with good mns. Noel fending splendidly. j Toe Blues steadily worked the ball, Twiname and Shepard dribbling over, and at last securing a try, which Drabble easily I converted into a goal. The play bo far had beea decidedly ia favor of the Blues, the I forwards especially sbowinsr marked superiority. After the kick off the Blues worked the leatner down again right on to | the Beds' goal line, and after a long j Btruggle Colquhoun, by a brilliant run, shifted the bcene of strife to the centre flag, and play was surging back and forI ward here when half-time was called, amid anything but a refreshitg shower.
With the wind at their backs New South Wales were expected to score, but at theoutset the Blue for war da carried all before them for some time, until Sbaw and Cany by gr_nd rnna from a pass by the Bkei,. carried the ball right into Otago's quarter.,, being within an ac. of scoring. Noel responded with a good run, and play wa* brought again clo.e to the vi-tore'line, Blaxland by a good kiuk eventually relieving them. The Blue forwards still proved superior and worked the play bank again, and a scrum was formed on the goal line which the Reds' carried, and after a rush the play was brought tothecentre of the ground, and after some' scrums Walker secured a mark, from which no ground resulted, owing to tha EA*-* good play. The Beds were playingWp well, Shaw, Blaxland, Caird, Delaurej*-* k|3 t Others being prominent, but they G?®! got past the centre flag, from where a?Blue rush took it into close quarters. Shaw relieved his side, but it was back again, and in an attempt at a pot by Allan forced them down. After some play Morrison levelled a rush, and Noel securing the ball all but got over ; a scrum on the line resulting in another force-down. No sooner was play started than the Blues had it down again Just under the goal. New South Wales cleared the line a little, but Hope,, surrounded by opponents, got the ball and potted a splendid goal. From the kick off,. well followed up, Otago hai to touoh down. The Blue forwards, headed by Morrison, again carried all before ♦hem. ' The best runs and passes of the day thea took place between Allan, Marsh, •__. Noel, and a try was saved by a Sydney man getting on the ball juetß sit fell. AmAh by the Blues again forced the Beds down. Marsh and Noel played brilliantly, and the manner in which Noel time and again forced his way through was heartily applauded. 'Ihe sympathies of the onlookers was almost entirely iv favor of the visitors, and e__ bit of good play was cheered to the echo. The individual play of the Sydney men was again brilliant, but lack of combination was again prominent.
