THAMES, September 11. Geo. Harcourt, the absconding legal Manager, was charged to-day in the Court with embezzling £75 from the Kureka Gold Company, and also £14 83 6d. th« charge being at the instance cf the Official Assignee. Prisoner was remanded to Thursday, 16th inst.. and admitted to bail of £200 self and two sureties of £iOO on each charse. AUCKLAND, September 11. Mr Archibald Smith tried to commit suicide by cutting his throat last night, but only a flight wound was inflicted. He appeared in the Police Court tnis morning and was remanded. At the boxing contest at Lome street Hall last night between Jobn Laurie, the West Coast champion, and Jas. Martin, a local man, in the fourth round, .Laurie knocked his opponent out of time and was declared the winner of tbe f tikes, £25. The Auckland Begatta Committee has fixed the price of the Champion WhsJpboat Bace for the coming regatta at £160, if five crews compete. . . The manufacture of anti-fouling paint in Auckland has not proved a successful industry. The originator, G. G. Baird, examined in bankruptcy before the Official Assignee, stated that he could not induce the Union Steamship Company to use the paint for their vessels.

Beale, a well-known grocer, for many years in business in this town, died suddenly lant night from heart disease as he was returning home from a friend's house, where he had been spending the evening. WELLINGTON, September 11.
