Stout said the Government would place a sum on the supplementary estimate* for relieving urgent case* of sufferer* by the recent volcanic eruptions at Botoraa. Mr Tatlob asked the Minister for Public Works if the Government will concede the same privileges to the employes in the locomotive department of th* railway service as those granted to men employed in the traffic department of the same rervioe* Mr BicHABDsoN said he could not see his wsy to comply with the request. _Mr Gb4.cs asked the .Government—l. whether the Government will as soon as possible send aa officer to ascertain the extent of damage dons or loss sustained by settlers in tne Bay of Plenty district through, the recent voleanio eruption? I a. Wnether the Government will cause a revaluation, by the Property Tax Valuators, of aU properties in the said district affected by the volcanic deposit, with a view of aa equitable adjustment of th* ' Pwperty tax thereon? 3. In doing so he took exception to an article in a Taranaki paper, which had described him as the larrikin of the House merely because he felt it his duty to oppose the BilL He deprecated attacks of tbia kind on hon. member* Who had a public duty to perform, aad he appealed to the Speaker as to whether he was ever socused of transgressing the rules of the House. He expressed his intention of taking advantage of the constitutional course open to him of opposing the BilL The debate on this Bill was still proceeding when the $ 80; adjournment cook place.
