MrE. H. Wast, Solicitor for New South Wale* in London, and Mr Fleming, agent of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, were present at the meeting befcweea Sir Chas. Tupper and the Agente-GeneraL Mr Fleming explained that two and a hell miliums would be required to ley a cable between Vancouver Island and New Zealand or Queensland; also that a subsidy of £67,000 would be required from the colonies and England, and he believed that the latter country was likely to contribute a third of the subsidy, provided that Government boeiiiees was free if it did not exceed the amount of the subsidy. Sir Arthur Blytb, AgentGeneral for South Australia, withdrew, after stating that he opposed the scheme.
