The returns of yesterday's elections show that the former Liberal seats of Sutherland and Tyneside have been secured by supporters of Mr Gladstone.
The above gives a total of 678, which is eight more than the number to be elected under the Bill passed last year for the extension of the franchise. Of coarse it is only given as an estimate. The members of (he House of Commons according to the new Act are as follows:—• ! England 465 Wales 30 Scotland 72 Ireland 103 870 At the conclusion of the last general election in the United Kingdom in December, 1885, the state of parties was estimated as under .—Liberals, 333; Coneerftttivesj 261; Parnellites, 86. A more precise analysis gave England 244 Liberals, 220 Conservatives; Wales, 27 liberals, 3 Conservatives; Scotland, 62 Liberal?, 10 GozQiervativea; and Ireland, 18 Conservative* and 86 Parnellites. The latter have now changed sides, and whether as Parnellites or Nationalist*, may be added to the Gladstonitee, whose total will even tfcei&be little more than balf that of the Conservatives and Unionists, bo that Mr Gladstone's scheme of a Parliament in Dnb&n has not met with the approval of the |ation.
