SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
a The usual meeting of the Council was held last evening. Present—Councillors Booth, Gledhill, White, Jones, Langdown, Fisher, Day, and Bowden. In the absence of the Mayor Cr. White waa voted to tiie chair. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows .-—Beferred to the Works Committee—From the Heathcote Boad Board (two letters) in reference to the maintenance of Wilson's road; from Messrs Garrick and Co., forwarding draft of Tramway Company's deed of consent re tramway Mr S. Jones, again drawing attention to the state of the lootpath in Talford street; from the Christchurch District Drainage Board re Jackson's Creeks from Mr H. Cooper, complaining of tbe state of the footpath in Shakespeare street. The following letters were received. From Colonial Treasurer, acknowledging receipt of resolutions objecting to the proposed amendments to the Drainage Aot, and stating that a clause bad been inserted in the Local Bodies Loan Bill, on the motion of Mr Garrick, which would probably meet the case. From the Heathcote Boad Board, declining to appoint a delegate re the opening of Jackson's creek. From ihe Bailway Department, Wellington, stating they could not comply with ihe Council's request for aid towards improving and asphalting the footpaths near the railway station. The Works Committee's report' was' read and, after slight amendments, was adopted to the following en*, cts:—The Tramway Company had promised to repair the lines as requested. The Government offered no objection to the proposed straightening of __zeldean street opposite the Government section if it were done without expense. Tne land proposed to be taken was owned by Mr W. White, sen., who is now in England. Delivery had been taken of 500 casks of cement from Mr C. W. Turner. Authority was requested to erect an iron shed in tbe Council's yards in Colombo atreet, for storage purposes. The foreman had been instructed to proceed with the construction of a footpath in Jerrold street, on tbe south side to Collins' street, and from thence to Lincoln road on the north side ef the Btreet. Since August 22nd, 1885, four medical men had reported 148 caseß of infectious diseases, 187 of which were cases of measles. Tne Finance Committee reported that the receipts during the past fortnight had been—'From rates, &c, .£1717s 7d; rent of reserves and refund on ai-peart, 4115 8s 3d; the credit balance at Bank on general and interest account, .£2043 11b 2d; on fixed deposit, 421,500; debtor on loan current account, j-1711 lis 10i. Tney recommended that a copy of a letter attached, re the valuation roll, be sent to the Borough representative at WeUington. The report was received and adopted. A telegram was read from Mr B. M. Taylor, J—JLB. for the Borough, stating that owing to strong opposition the Drainage Boara's Bill haa been withdrawn. On the motion of Cr. Jokes, seconded by Cr. liAxtavowa, it waa resolved that Mr Taylor's telegram be acknowledged, and that he be assed if a clause baa Oeen inserted in the Local Bodies Loan' Bill giving tbe Drainage Board power to anti- | cipa*e its revenue by borrowing from a Bank ; if so, and, the clause has not yet been adopted by the House, that Mr Taylor be asked, to oppose tbe clause to tiie utmost. ! The Council then adjourned. j
