VOLUNTEER PICNIC.
The complimentary picnic given by the Volunteers to the ladies who worked to energetically for the late bazaar, took pUoa on Wednesday, Nov. 26, and was one of the. moat enjoyable outings of the season, A start was made at 9 SO a.m. by special trail to Lyttelton, from 150 to 200 accepting tea invitation of the Volunteers to take par) in the picnic. On arrival at Lyttelton, the party was nut by the Orphanage BaiuL j who pla-ed several aira before the ens barkation took place. Messrs Agar and Roberts had two Bteam launches, tee Lji. tolton and the Canterbury, alongside the breastwork, and the exoursionists, under the able mashalling of Col. Lean andCapt, R.C. Bishop, wereeoonstowedawaj onboard, though it was rather close quarters. On getting out into the fair way a little north, east roll was on, which caused some of tin ladies to think regretfully of home fox' % while, but after a few moments Admiral George Agar, who was in command of the flotilla, ran his craft into Diamond Harbor, and all was peace. No time was lost ia disembarking, and after a delightful walk over some of the most formidable-looting boulders it has been the lot of war chroniclers to meet with, the trjßting spot ma reached in the splendidly-shaded paddocks of Mr H. D. Gardiner. Here a fatigue partybad erected tents, Ac., 'f convenient," as our Hibernian friends would say to the groves of trees, and as the commiigariat had arrived s;me little time before the Colottel ordered the bugle to sound the assembly for refreshment, aa order which it is needless to fay was obeyed most cheerfully. This over, toe parte dispersed, some going up the hills fern hunting, others joining in various games until lunch was announced. This)part of the proceedings was in the hands of Mr Buggy, who catered light loyally, Meters Wane, Hockley and Co., supplying the winer, Ao. When the ladies were all eeated: under the shade of the trees it presented a very pretty sight. Kiea in the ring, 'putting the stone, races, Ac., were then set going, until the Bhades of evening warnjfl the revellers that the time to pa»V \ arrived.. A cup of tea, brewed aIT .y, - 'having been dispensed, a move was mads ,'forthe lauhchetr,andthe homeward trip Via •accomplished most pleasantly. During the day the launoh ran a tiip round Bipa Island, many of the ladies availing then. selves of the opportunity of a pleasant sail. The Volunteer officers are to be congratulated on the auoceas attendant upon their pionio, all present having molt 'thoroughly and completely enjoyed them- ; The Orphanage Band played during the 'day, and capitally, too, both danoe xnusjb jand marches. The Mayor of ChriatohurcV land Major Wolfe arranged for several raoaj for the youngsters, which were,.well com-" peted.
