DUNEDIN BIRTHDAY RACES.
[Fans ASSOCIATION T-D-WH-AH.] I „_, DUNEDIN, May 25. The second day of the D.J.C. Birthday I Meeting was successful. The weather was glorious, and the attendance good. The racing was also good, the finishes close, and the storting all that could be desired. The running of Daisy in the Trot excited much comment, compared with her running on SaturJay, The btewords held ah Butler and the ; . Hubx-lb Each. * Trapper and-Bocket were the favorites. A good start-was effected. Garibaldi and Glenara going to the front. Bound the top turn Hector went to the front. At the back hurJle Garibaldi fell, and was out of it. Passirg the stand Hector led, with Little John and Bocket close up. Bikthday Handicap. Captain Webster and Tim Whiffler jumped away with the lead. At the half mile the Captain, having the inside running, forged ahead, and from thereout held it, winning easily. Coming into the straight Lady Emma passed Tim, and came in second, three lengths behind the Captain. Time, 2mia 17* sec. Dividends—Jßllss and £1 143. Novkl Bacb, of 80 Eova. One mile. Mr Sherwin's b g Mokarokara, Bat 51b, aged (White) 1 M. and C. Hobbs' Jack, 4 yrs, 7at 101b -,_ _-. „. (Stratford) 2 Mr G. Eivers' b g Besartos, 6 yrs,7&tßlb (Rivers) 3 Ten faced the flag, bat Mayboy waa again fractious and did not get away with tihe •there, running along the outside only to the distance. Jack and Lallafiookh went to the front, but at the back of the course Mokarakara went up, and the horses were all in a cluster except 'i oko. Coming into the straight Jack led with Mokarokara and Lalla Bookh side by side. In the straight Lalla fell back beaten, and the whips were out to Jack and Mokarokara, the latter just getting his nose in fronton the pest, Besartus running into the third place. Time, lmin 55aeca. Dividends, £7 18 a and _25 Is. Thb Winieb Handicap Tbot. Mr P. Butler's Daisy ... 1 Oliver 2 Sandy ... 3 Time, fimin 143ecs. Dividends, £3 6a 6d and £312 a. Twelve started. 1 The Stewards met to consider the in- I consistent running of Daisy, but decided there was not sufficient evidence to disqualify, but cautioned the owner (Mr Butler) and the rider. St. CiiAin Wslthb Handicap, 100 bovb; second horse 10 bovb. Seven furlongs. Winner of the Birthday Handicap to carry 71b extra. Mr J. Stephenson's eh g Taiaroa, 5 yra, 9st9lb (Waddell) 1 Mr J. Rivers' br g Don Jobs, aged, Sst 41b (Rivers) 2 Mr M. and C. Hobbs* Borderman, 5 yra, (White) 3 Ouida, Bat 21b, also started. Mr Stephenson declared to win with Taiaroa. After one false start a capital one was effected, Don Jose taking the lead. At the back of the course the four closed up well together. Ouida then went to the front, but coming into the straight Ouida fell back, and Taiaroa waa brought up. A capital race up tbe straight followed between Taiaroa and Don Jose, but a few lengths from home Taiaroa got in front and won, Den Jose a good second, and Borderman a fair third. Time, lmin 37£ sec. Dividends, £3 7a and £3 0s 6d. Thb Totai,isatob Benbvolent Gipx. Cheap Jack 1 Warwick 2 Besartus ... _. 3 Dividend, £2 5a 6d. It was dark before the Consolation Bace waa got oft, and the jockeys of nearly all the seven starters claimed the race. Joelappeared to be the winner, but as the Judge was unable to place them he declared it no race. It will be run off to-morrow. The total amount put through the machines for the two days was .£9972. The Dunedin agenb has omitted to send details of the principal race—the Birthday Handicap.
