SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
The usual monthly meeting of this Society was held last evening at the City Council Chambers. Mr P. G. Kimbell nas in the chair. There was not a large attendance. The Szcrxtabt, Mr Shaw, read a letter from Miss Jervois, in reply, saying that while she sympathised strongly with tie objects of the Society, she would not be able to assist in the- organisation of a Ladies* Committee in connection with it. Mr Shaw also read a report of the work done by the Society in the last two months, by which it appeared that three informations had been laid, all of which, though dismissed, had been admitted by the Magistrates -who heard them to have been justified. The Inspector had exercised a constant supervision over the markets, &c, and had given cautions—twelve for working horses in an unfit state, and twenty-seven for carrying poultry to
aarket in improper cages. Beports bad been received from the Auckland Society—its first year, which appeared to be in a most flourishing condi-tion-and from the Taemanian Society, ite fifth year, whose prospects were also of a -"Omising character. Mr Shaw mentioned Auckland Society had been formed --JlaGs"» of the Canterbury Society ; 25 founder,' TfiSeed, had been led to interest himself in the work from what he had learned here. A number of papers collected by Sir John Hall in America had been forwarded by him. It was the intention of the Secretary to collate from them some of the numerous ■ interesting facts they contained, and to give the results in a paper to be read at some future time. It might be well to note in the meantime that there were about 14,000 children in the United States connected with the movement, their assistance was much encouraged, and had become very popular. Mr Shaw hoped after consideration to be able to suggest gome means at an early date whereby the young people of this province might be induced to join the juvenile branch of the
Bode%. After some conversation on routine matters the meeting terminated.
