The animal meeting of the Nelson Chamber of Commerce was held this afternoon, when Mr J. Sclanders, retiring Chairman, delivered a very lengthy address. After referring to the work done by the Chamber, and specially alluding to the East and West Coast Railway, he spoke of what was done at the Conference of Associated Chambers, and made reference to the bankruptcy laws and other matters. Mr Sclanders received a hearty vote of t-hantn for his address. Mr J. H. Cock was elected Chairman, and Mr J. Sharp ViceChairman for the ensuing year. BEEFTON, February 9. Mr Leyestam, M.H.8., and Mr Field have visited every part of the district in reference to the East and West Coast railway, and have already obtained guarantees exceeding .£2OO. To-morrow they proceed to Grey Valley in furtherance of their object. DUNEDIN, February 9. A house at the Peninsula occupied by Mr Henry, a telegraphist, was burned down yesterday. Henry's effects were insured for J6IOO, and Hooper, to whom the house belonged, was insured for J62OJ—both in the Royal. Captain Charles Fraser, who had commanded the steamers Storm Bird, Wanganui. Star of the South, Oreti and others, died yesterday. He had been ailing for some time past. Another conference of delegates with regard to the frozen meat trade is to be held in Chrisfcchurch early in March. A report, prepared by Mr John Boberts (of Murray, Roberts and Co.), for the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, after inquiry and inspection in England, will be laid before the meeting. At a meeting of the local Exhibition Committee to-night, Mr Callis met them and explained the reason of the charge ef Iβ "per foot, which the Committee accepted as satisfactory. A house of six rooms, occupied by Luke Ayson, Warepa, was destroyed by fire early thia morning. Mrs • Ayson and family were absent. Ayson escaped only partly dressed. The fire was purely accidental.
