Mr Hooker, Conservator of Forests for the Southern Dietricta of India, arrived this morning accredited with letters to Hie from the Governor of Madras Presidency. In the absence of His Excellency Mr Hooker interviewed Mr Tole, who provided hi™ with all the information in his power, as well as facilities for travelling whilst in the country. I understand it Is Mr Hooker's intention to carefully study the forests of New Zealand, especially devotinglhis attention to the kauri forests in the hope of suggesting some means for their conservation. Mr Hooker first goes South to interview His Excellency, bnt will commence Mb tour of inspection in the North Island as the home of the kauri.
