DIOCESAN SYNOD.

Fbtoatv Octobbb 31st. The Synod resumed *t twenty« five | minutes past four o'clock yesterday afteinoon. His Lordship the Bishop presiding. The Eev. F. Knowlxs laid on the table 8 statement of the assets and liabilities of the Beveral churches in the Diocese up to the end of September, 1884. His Lobdbhip the Pbihath stated that Mr E. Westenra bad been appointed to fill the vacancy, among the English Loan Trustees, caused by the diath of Mr H. J. Tancred. On the motion of the Rev. C. Bower, the Bill to amend regulations for tbe management of cemeteries was read a third time and passed. The Rev. J. 08. Hoabb moved—"!. That any Member of the Synod intending to introduce a Bill to- amend the financial regulations shall give notice of his intention, together wiCh tbe provisions of the said Bill, to the Standing Committee not lees than two calendar months previous to the assembly of Synod. 2. That all such notices shall be published by the Standing Committee in the issue of the' Church News' for the month immediately preceding that in which the Sjnod meets, and that copies of the notices be sent to each member of Synod." Mr Malet seconded the motion. The Very Eev. the Dean suggested the addition after Synod of the words " provided that this resolution ehall not apply to any BUI introduced by the President or at the instance of the Standing Committee." The House went into Committee to consider the motion, which was reported as amended, and carried on the Synod resuming. The Dean moved—" 1. That the Synod having had laid before it, in report of the Cathedral Chapter, the urgent recommendation of Mr B. W. Mountfort, that no time should be lost in taking measures to obtain the necessary timber for the completion of the Cathedral, fully recognises the importance of the recommendation 2. That the Synod, cordially acknowledge ing the value of the services rendered bj the Cathedral Guild in the past, not onlj in building portions of the nave, but ii helping to keep up public interest in the work, desires to commend to that bodj this new enterprise, in the hope that i may see its way to take it up, and prose cute it with renewed vigor." The Dean was in possession at the tim< of the six O ,Q IOCk adjournment; The Synod resumed at 7.45 p.m., and oi The Eev. Canon Cholmondeley'a motion the Bill to amend the Cemetery Regula tions was read a second time and considered in Committee. On tbe House resuming, the Bill wac reported by Mr Mauds aa amended. The Dean resumed his speech on th< motion standing in Ibis name, recognising the importance of measures being taken t< obtain the necessary {timber for the com pletion of the Cathedral. The Hon. H. B. Gbesson seconded th« first part of the resolution. The Eev. C. C. Bowjcn suggested th addition of the words, "and comment the carrying out of the work to the libe rality of churchmen throughput th< diocese." The Dban accepted the Sev. JE Geesson seconded, the second part of th motion, which was carried with tbe sut stitution of the following words for thos after " work," " and expressed a hope tha they will prosecute such work with renewe vigor." The Eev. Canon Cholmondkley movec and the Eev. J. W. Stack seconded"Thftt the Synod heartily concurs inth recommendation of the Houses of Convocs tion of Canterbury and York and the Hone of Bishops of the Church of America, an. communicated to the Most Beverend th Primate of New Zealand by hia Grace th Archbishop cf Canterbury, that 'any da; either in the week next before Advent o in the first week of Advent, with prefer ence for the week of Saint Andrew's day, be observed as a day of intercession fo: Missions, and considers it desirable tha the Society for the Propagation of thi Gospel in Foreign Parts, the Church. Mis eionary Society, and the Society for Pro mo ting Christian Knowledge, should, a heretofore, participate in equal proportion ia the offerings at such time cf special in tercession." The motion was carried. Archdeacon Haekis moved—"l. Tha this Synod having regard to the verj small number of members of the Churcl residing in the neighborhood of the sit< offered by Mr Twentyman, and the dun cultyof arranging for more than one service in each quarter to be held there, and the want of funds for the building of a church, regrets that, while WianTring Mr Twentyman for his offer, it cannot accept the eight acres of land on the conditions prescribed. 2. That Mr Menzies , offer of JBISO for the building of a parsonage house at Pigeon Bay be accepted, provided the site be approved by the Standing Committee, and that the Church Property Trustees be recommended to make a grant of J2250 for the same, on the condition that the rules and regulations sanctioned by the Church Property Trustees respecting parsonage houses be complied with. 3. That Mrs Oebbie's offer of an acre of land at the Head of the Bay, including the site of St. Peter's Church, be accepted with thanks, and that it be a recommendation to the Church Property Trustees to defray all expenses connected with the conveyance of the land." The clauses were taken seriatim, and carried after amendment. The Synod went into Committee to consider the following motion by Mr F. de C. Mal2t-"(1.) That from and after the 31st December, 1883, the three existing Christchurch city parishes be relieved from the annual payment for giwiring fond in respect of the loan secured on the Christchurch parsonage reserve. (2.) That the Church Property Trustees be authorised to realise the permanent investment shares taken out by the three parishes at their value on, say, the 31st December, 1884, amounting in all to about £3(0, (3 ) That the shares thus realised be i β-utvested by the trustees as a special einkiDg fund, to accumulate at compound interest. (4.) That the interest on the loan be paid out of the rentals of the reserve. (5.) That in case of the rentals on the reserve being insufficient to pay the interest on the loan, the deficiency shall be charged against the nett income of the Cranmer square parish. (6.) That the trustees shall keep on foot out of the income of the Cranmer square parish, and for the benefit of that parish, the permanent investment shares already taken out on behalf of the parish. (7) That after payment of the amount required to "keep up the permanent investment shares taken up on behalf of the Cranmer square parish, and of the deficiency (if any) between the sett rentals of the reserve and the interest on the loan, the balance be equally divided between the parishes of St. Luke, St. Michael and St. John, until such time as the Cranmer square pariah shall have been duly constituted." The clauses were moved separately, and on the House resuming were reported and tarried. .

The Dkan moved — "That the die- \ trict of Dampier*s Bay and the neighbor- ] hood be separated from the parish of Holy ' Trinity, Lyttelton, and formed into a , parochial district, to be called the parochial i district of Dampier's Bay." j The Hon. H. B. Obxssov seconded the motion, which evoked an animated and a < long dieontsion. \ Mr Murray-Atnslet moved the adjourn- ■ ment of the debate until next session, but : ultimately withdrew his motion. i The Bey. J. F.T»axl» moved the adjournment of the Syn64Trata Monday. < The motion was not seconded. A division was taken, and resulted in the motion being negatived. At twenty-flve. minutes past twelve the Synod adjourned until 4 p.m.
