AUCTIONEERS' REPORTS.

Messes H. Matboh ahd Co. report on the live stock market, Ac.,.for the week ending Thursday, August 14th, 1884, as follows r~ For yesterday's Addington Market about an average supply of mutton and beef came to hand, both store sheep and cattle being penned in limited numbers osly. Is quality tbe fat sheep were well up to previous sales iafactoseortwoisfenor asd about the same sumber of secosd rate Uses comprised tie exceptions to a general entry of piime mutton. The inclement weather immediately preceding and during the sale, militated considerably against the days proceedings, both as regards the appearance of the stock, and also in preventing so full an attendance of buyers from outside di-tacts, who, as a rule, assist by way pf competition is clearing the day a lots. At the opening of the sale there was but a small musterisg of " the trade/* those prei sent evidently suffering from the depressing effects of tae wet morning, and as a consequence an utter abserce of spirit was noticeable in the biddings. One or two of the first pens of sheep were passed unsold, and though this only took place in a few instances, yet it was impossible to infuse any life into the day's transactions, or to uphold last week's prices, which suffered generally to the extent of 1b per, hea<L The chief feature of the market, indeed the centre of attraction throughout the whole day, was a pen of moat excellent merino wethers, which to cay the least may be termed is " market parlance as as extraordinary "phesomenon" in sheep ; breeding. These sheepwerebredjfed, and I penned for sale by Mr Leonard White, of South Bakaia, whose first, attempt at '■ breeding merinos is the Bakaia paddocks has produced results beyend the most sanguine expectations. For symmetry, compactness of carcase, deepness of flesh, density and length of staple of fleece, they most certainly represented a curiosity in the shape of perfection. The merino wethers under notice were two shear sheep, bred from Cheviot Hill ewes by a South Australian ram, bred by Mr Haines, of Angustown, S.A. They received no artificial food, never having had hay or turnips, but are the result from the grass paddocks of the owner, who may congratulate himself upon having practically proved what our farmers may do with the open plains of Canterbury by the exercise of ordinary precautions. '1 he average weight was 951b each, price realised 27s -per head, I and the clip last season gauged lllb each sheep. Messrs Hopkins and Co., of Colombo street*Blaugntered and exhibited some of the carcases tbis morning. Eeturaisg to the geseral busisess of the day, os account of Mr Leonard White, we also placed a well-grazed line of crossbred: wethers at 17s to 17s 9d, one small pen at' 16s; account Messrs Gould and Cameron, 3CO heavy weight crossbred ewes at 15s 3d to 16s 6d,twopens of smaller sheep at!3s lidaccount Mr Jno. Milne, crossbred wethers at 15s: account the Acton estate, per Mr W. H. Allan, 150 half-bred ewes at 13s 9d; account Mr T. Langdon, 110 mixed crossbreds at 15s and 15s 3d; account Messrs Sutton and Monkhouse, 100 mixed crossbreds to 13s; merino wethers at lls7d; account Mr Smithson, 126 two and fourtooth light weight wethers at 14s; account Mr J. Sowdes, crossbred wethers to 16s 3d j ICO meriso wethers to 12s 3d; account Messrs Edmonds and Gebbie, crossbred bred wethers at lis 9d; half-bred at 13s 7d; 110 meriso wethers at 10s 6d * account Mr B.Wright. 150 crossbreds at 14s 6d to 15s; account Mr F. H. Britten, two-tooth withers at 14s 9d, &c. We quote theheat i»».u-bred nvether muttou up to 2sdt*!3L,„"* 'an l to tbe absence of country buyeraTrr* l ". Q 0 cause above mentioned. *a-- demand noticeable for several weeks past was scarcely maintained, but as far as the trade is actually concerned, the inquiry for young sheep or breeding ewes is considerably is excess of the supply. Privately during tha week we have placed a big line of merino ewes, chiefly old sheep, at. 7s 6d per be and about 300 full-mouthed crossbred ewes at 13s 6d. Os Wednesday we sod cull merino ewes at 4s 6d; crossbred ewes at 12s; iresh conditioned merino wethers at'Bs; store wethers, is low condition, at 4s 3d, &c. In beef the supDly wai iully equal to the day's requirements; an fact the transactions were less satisfactory than for several sales past. Buyers wera evidently careless of purchasing to any extent, and would only operate at prices ranging from about 17s to a trifle under 20s per 1001b. On account of Messrs Chapman Bros., we sold 12 head cattle at £6 17s 6d to £3; for Mr J. Judge, 12 head medium weights at £4 17s 6d to -5512s 6d; account Mr T. H. Potts, mixed cattle at -65 153 to £8 10s; account Mr George Kinley, steers at £S 10s to -87; account Mr F. Pyne, 6 head at £8 17s 6d to £3, Ac. Is store cattle there is a little! more enquiry, asd buyers can now be found for healthy fines of young stock that a few weeks ago would almost have been unsaleable. Though there is nothing in the price of beef to warrant us is expecting a brisk trade in stores, yet the next few months will bring about the chief transactions in this class of stock that will take place during the season. Among others, we placed the following on Wednesday—l 2 head at 555, 7 at 67s 6d, 4 at 74a, 4 at 63a 6d, asd privately during the week we have placed a Use of 40 head of mixed sexes at £3 2s 6d. The totals yarded for the day comprised 4772 sheep, 258 head of cattle, asd 103 pigs, of whioh our entry comprised sheep, 116 head of cattle, asd 34 pigs, for the Actos Estate, Messrs B. Wright, 13. White, T. Langdon, Sutton asd Monkhouse, Gould and Cameron, John Milne, F. C. Gardiner, J. Sowden, Edmonds and Gebbio, V. H. Brittan. H. Knowles, C. Stewart. Jas. Kinley, Biddle, Jas. Hayward, J. Voss, J. Slattery, B. Brewer, F. Sutton, J. Judge, Chapman Bros., T. H. Potts, G. Kinley, J. Bell, F. Pyne, M. Malley, H. Pannett, A. Keith, Jno. Davis, J. Moriarty, W. Ewens, T. H. Green, S. Gallagher, asd others. Canterbury Horse Market—At Tattersail's os Saturday last our entry for the darr waa rather below the average of late, 98 horses osly being catalogued. Although we did a fair amoust of business, yet trade was a little quieter than at the two previous sales, a good few exporters beisg absent, asd moat of the others comparatively full up, waiting for shipment. The class of stock on offer was certainly sot equal in point of quality to what we have had of late, asd to this so doubt is due is a great measure the absence of spirit os the part of those present. On aocoust of Mi Jackson, of Methven, we offered a line of ten cr twelve farm horses, chiefly aged, good working sorts, which we placed at prices ranging np to £21; one or two unbroken colts of the same consigment being passed unsold. For other .owners we disposed of from 40 to 50 horses of various descriptions, useful farm horses,-815 to -381 10s; hack and light harness horses of an average stamp, £12 to £17; one well-bred gelding by Totara, at 30 guineas: ordinary hacks, -35 to £10; aged draught horses, £8 to £12; unbroken colts, medium stamp, £12 to £15, &c. The horse JK ariatiana was withdraws at 50 guineas, aa also a promising entire colt by Young Performer. Through our Sydney agents we have sold by wire for a client a draught stallion at 350 guineas, another colt at 120 guineas, as also through the same agency a line of 30 draught horses at full Sydney values. Wool, Sheepskins, Hides, and TallowOn Thursday at the Canterbury wool stores, we catalogued 2235 sheepskins, 355 ex hides asd calfskins, asd 182 bags and packages rough fat, asd tallow. Is cossequence of the inclemency of the weather lately, the entries all round were lighter than usual; still they proved sufficient for the demand, purchasers being unable to move stocks off till sunshine re-appears. There was a full attendance of the trade, asd biddings were fairly brisk, resulting is a clearance at the following rates: — Butchers' crossbreds at 3s 9d, 4s, 4s sd, 4s 9d, 63,5s 2d, Ss 4d to 5s sd; inferior, 2s, 2s 3d. 2s 6d. 3s, 3s 3d to 3s 6di merinos, 3s 3d, 3s 6d, a»9d, 4s, 4s 3d, 4s 6d. 4e 9d, 43 lid to 5s ld; country skins, ld,3d, 6d, is ld, 2s, 2s 6d, 3s to 4s lOd. August 14th, as foUows:—The supply of stock at the Canterbury saleyards on Wednesday was a fair average one, 4772 sheep, 258 head of cattle, asd 103 pigs forming the entry. The rough morning precluded a large attendance of buyers, and appeared also to exercise a depressing influence on those that did muster, and throughout the sales there was a marked absence of animation. The fat sheep market comprised a few good drafts of crossbred wethers, the best of which fetched*lßs 6d per head; ordinary sorte, 14s to 16s; ewes, from 12s 9d to 14a 9d; meriso wethers, from 8s to 13s 3d. The feature of the day's sale was a pcs of superb meriso wethers from the estate of Mr L.TV hite, Bakaia, asd which, Btarted at a guinea per head, ras up to 275, at which price they were ksocked dows to a local butcher. Taken as a whole, however, the fat sheep market was dull asd spiritless, asd with a reductios is values ot from Is to Is 6d per head. The same may be said of the Btore sheep market.
