The Cabinet has under consideration » proposal for a direct steam service with England. The Launceston Chamber of Commerce has condemned the acceptance of any scheme before Parliament has had aa opportunity of considering the same. A Bill willbe shortly introduced into Parliament to authorise the construction of tramways in Hobart. ADELAIDE. The Chief Secretary moved the adjournment of the House for a fortnight. Mr Bray deprecated the delay of a fortnight when business is co pressing, and taunted Government with being divided on the taxation and land questions. Mr Cotton stated the Government intended to introduce measures on both subjects. A special inquiry ef a searching nature will be made into the recent outbreak of opthalmia at Magill Industrial School. BRISBANE. A consignment of fourteen Hereford bulls has been landed safely from New Zealand. ilcMurdo and Davis, charged with infringing the labor regulations, will be sent to Fiji by H.M.S. Baven to-morrow for trial by the High Commissioner of the Pacific.

SCke application for the release of Arthur jrfj&gweil from the Parramatta Asylum has, after some evidence, been adjourned to permit the attendance of Thomas Cresswell, brother of the lunatic. Charles Cresswell is their brother, but the lvnatio himself insists that his name is not Arthur, but William. The evidence generally is conflicting. Business continues dull, but is likely to improve.
Government are about finding work for a number of the unemployed, but only offer 5s a day, and give a preference to married men.
The barque Mary Evans, from Noumea, arrived yesterday after a terrible passage, having met with a succession of hard gales. The crew had to subsist for nine daye on one biscuit a day, rioe, and albatross.
