Received December 28th, 2.40 p_. LONDON, December 27. A report is currentto-day that the French Government intends to hold the Chinese Government answerable for the expenses the French may incur in despatching troop_ to Tonquin, in consequence of the hostile attitude of China in that country.
Telegrams are to hand from Newfoundland announcing that a serious riot occurred in the harbor of Gracepert, in Conception Bay, between Orangemen and Catholics. The rival parties numbered several hundreds, and fighting was carried on for some time. Three contestants were killed and a number seriously wounded in the affray. Received December 29th, la.m. LONDON, December 23. The Aus—_lian mails, dated Melbourne, November 17th, per Orient steamship Chimbora—, were delivered via Naples yesterday. Obituary—Thomas HoUoway, proprietor HoUoway's pills and ointment. Received December 29—i, 1 a_a. LONDON, December 27. The total reserve in the Bank of England is £12,300,000, being a decrease of £700,009 compared with the'reserve last Thursday. The proportion of reserve to liabilities has fallen six per cent, during the week, and is now 37 per cent. The Bank rate of discount remains at three per cant,, and the market rate at 2}. Consols are unchanged atloo}, and New Zealand securities are quoted as follows t— Five per Cent. 10-40 Loan, 104$ j Five per Cent. 1889 Loan, 103 i; Four-and-a-half Per Cent. 1879-1904 Loan, 101* ; Four Per
Cent. Inscribed Stock, 100. The wheat and t dlow markets are without quotable change. Best Scotch pig iron has further fallen 6d per ton, and is now quoted, f.0.b., in Clyde, at 46a 6d. Galvanised iron, 86----guage, has declined to —18, packed in cases, f.0.b., in London. Received December „th/i-an. ST. PETERSBURG, December 28. A bußetin issued to day, states that the Csar is recovering from the accident to his shoulder recently sustained while hunting. Received December 29th, 1 a.m.

General Grant met with a painful accident, having slipped in the street and fallen heavily, seriously injuring his hip.

Two of the torpedo boats for New Zealand will be shipped by the ship Lyttelton, which leaves early in January. The new gun-boat Protector, ordered for Vie toria, has been successfully launched on the Tyne.
