AKAROA COUNTY COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the Akaroa County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Duvauchelle's Bey, on Saturday last. Present—Messrs T. 8. Baker (chairman). W. Barnett, G. S. Fleming, J. Gebbie, G. B. Jbblin, W. T. Mesefield, J. Pettigrew, and Bey. B. B. Bradley.—The chairman made the following statement of the business to come before the Council that day -.—Since our last meeting a petition has been filed in the Besident Magistrate's Court, Akaroa, protesting against the election of Mr J.B. Barker as councillor for the Okein'e bay riding on the grounds of illegal voting, and *t the Court of Enquiry duly held for the purpose the Reeldent Magistrate declared the election of the said Mr J. B. Barker on the26;h uU. as void. The clerk had therefore instructed thereturning officer to take the necessary steps to have the extraordinary vacanoy filled. The first business for consideration is Mr George Armstrong's claim for compensation for land taken under The Publio Works Act for the extension of the Balguerie ro»d, which is as follows: £30 for land taken and £120 for fencing, and he (the chairman) thought that the steps they should take was to offer Mr I Armstrong the amount due for the land, as it 1 had been distinctly understood that the feno- [ ing was only to be ereoted when necessary, or to allow the matter to be settled by an Assessment Court, as provided by the Pnbiio Works Aot. The closing of part of the old Okain's Bay road, which was to have been considered that day, would have to be deferred until next meeting, as sufficient data had not yet been reoeived from the Okain's Bay Boad Board.—The following correspondence was read and considered:—from Mr George Armstrong, enclosing olaim for compensation for land taken for the Balguerie road. Some minutes and previous oorrespondenoe'bearing on this question were read. After some discussion, on the motion of Mr Matefield, it was resolved to write to Mr Armstrong, offering him the sum of £30, being at the rate of £10 per aore for land taken for the road, and tnat he be informed that the Counoil will pay for the fencing the said land when the fencing ie ereoted, as per his agreement made with the Counoil on May 29th, 1880.—From the Selwyn County Council, acknowledging receipt of copy of a letter reoeived from Government re letting out Lake Eilesmere. —From the Akaroa and Wainui Boad Board, that they have resolved to call for tenders for opening the Mount Bossu road through Bhodes' Flat, Wainui. Bβsolved — " That a copy of the Board's letter be forwarded to Mr A. O. Knight." — From the same, asking for the ohatnnan's certificate, grequired under section 5 of the Publio Works Act, 1880, for the sale of the land contained in the Old Duvauchelle's and Leßon'e Bay road. Eβsolved—"That the clerk be instructed to forward all the necessary papers connected with the closing of these roads to the Council's solicitors, and if found oorreot, ask them to forward the necessary certificates for the chairman's signature."—From Mr 0. Walmsley, Wainui, resigning his appointment as Begistrar of Dogs for the Wainui district. Resolved, "That the resignation be accepted." —Mr Masefield asked if it was not necessary for the Counoil to adopt the Fencing Aot passed last session. The Chairman stated that it was not necessary for the Council to adopt the Aot, as the Aot came into foroe on the Ist January rext ; but under section 40 of the Fencing Aot, 1881, the Counoil of any oounty (where the whole of the Counties Aot in in fores) may by resolution request the Governor to suspend the operation of the Act within such county, and may in a'• like manner request the Governor, who may by proclamation bring it into force again.— Mr Gebbie stated that the police in Tai Tapu and Port "Victoria ridings were summonsing everybody who had unregistered dogs in their possession, but complained of having no list of those who had registered their dogs. After some discussion, it was resolved to request the Begistrar of Dogs to furnish the police with a list of names of those persons who had registered their dogs during the past year.— Mr Joblitt gave notice that at the- next meeting of the Counoil he would move—" That this Counoil take steps for the protection of that portion of the Akaroa and Little Biver railway that passes through the Lake Eilesmere reserve, and also for the immediate utilisation of the said reserve..'* —After pass. ing some accounts to the amount of £52 Os 9d. the Council oa*joura& to January 28th next.
