The market rate of discount has been raised to 5f per cent.; the Bank rate remains at 5 per cent New Zealand securities are firm at last quotations. The market .for colonial breadstuffs is quiet but steady. Adelaide wheat, ex store, 565; New Zealand ditto, 525; Adelaide flour, ex store, 41s 6d. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,809,000 quarters. Australian tallow is firm at 39s 6d for best beef and -44s 6d for best mutton. December 18. It is announced that Sir Geo. Bramwell, who resigned the position of Lord Justice of Appeal in September last, has been raised to the peerage. The Marquis of Hartington, Secretary of State for India, made a speech today at Barley, Lancashire, in the course of which be stated that although the Leaguers were continuing a guerilla warfare in Ireland, there were hopeful signs that tbe agitation in that country was gradualy diminishing. Among the chief of these was the fact of an increasing tendency which has of late been shown on the part of juries to convict for agrarian offences. | It is announced that her Majesty the Queen will attend in person at the opening of Parliament in February next.
