POPULAR AMUSEMENTS ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the committee of the above' was held at the City Council Chambers yes-! terday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Present—His! Worship tbe Mayor of Christenuroh, Messrs | Andrews, Drewett, Alport (hon. treasurer),! Crooks, Samuels, Hobbs, Davie, and Haskins pion. sec). Tbe Mayor having briefly ex-1 Pained that the business would be to arrange for the annual sports to be held on Anniversary Day, December ISth next, called upon j the treasurer, who reported a balance in hand - from the operations of last year of £98 lis Bd. He reminded them that the association i had been started and kept going chiefly in oonnection with gentlemen of the City Coupoil, and that so far their efforts had been highly successful. If, this year, their preparations were a little backward, yet he was!. lure there was no intention of letting the: thing fall through. No doubt there would > be a great deal of work to be doneij by the. oommittee, but, as in formerl years, when the "time came they wouldj be found at their posts, and that they would| Be as completely suocessful as hitherto. He| had heard that there was a feeling in some quarters as to shifting the annual demonstration to the Ferry road. He was _ot in favor t of that, and he did not believe the majority! of the people were. Hagley Park was the * proper place for their operations, and he hoped that it would always remain so. They | had no intention of going into opposition! with Lancaster Park. What they did was to j provide sports for the people at large. They] took money thankfully from those who werej able to give it to them and chose, and for? those who could not pay, or would not, theyj provided free of charge. He had heard tha_| the Volunteers contemplated making a demon-; stration on Anniversary Day. If they conidj he induced to hold a review in the Park hej was sure that then, together with theirs sports, they would have! a holiday such as had not been seen in Canterbury for many a year. It wai' resolved—"That the sports be carried out this year-as usual," In disoussing finance it was pointed out that the association had a; building to be used « a committee room| whioh had been paid for last year, and thf only expense besides prizes whioh would faß| on them would be the preparation of th|g ground, whioh was indeed in tolerably goodj order. Mr Hsskins was re-appointed hoi_| secretary and Mr Alport hon. treasurer. Aj ground oommittee was elected of Messri Walkden, Drewett, Crooks, and Hobbal Messrs Andrews, Davie, Mftoheß, and Lambert were appointed a committee for preparation of a programme. Messrs George; Turner, senior, and James Campbell were elected-.embers of committee, and the meeting adjourned till Friday, Novembsr 25th, the Bub-oommi-tee being instructed -hen to bring up their reports..
