ASHBURTON.
The first meeting of this Council was held in the Town Hall on Monday, the 9th inst. Uγ Bullock, the newly elected Mayor, presided. The councillors present were—Messrs Williamson, Boberte, Shearman, E. Friedlander, Jas. Campbell, Orr, and Parkin. The Mayor and councillors took the necessary )atha. On the motion of Or. Friedlander, leconded by Cr. Orr, Crs. Campbell, Shearnan, the mover, and the Major were apjointed a committee to confer with the Road Board at their next meeting re the distribuion of funds now in hand. Cγ. Friedlander noved—" That the following councillors be a lommittee to draw up by-laws and report as oon aa possible:—Ore. "ivess, Orr, Williamon, Eoberts, and the Mayor." Cr. Campbell econded the motion, which was carried. Cr. ffilliamson moved—" That tenders be invited ram licensed surveyors for making a plan of he borough, showing the levels of all troefci." Cγ. moved, and -Cγ. Shearman seconded "That tenders be invited for malting a new roll and valuation of all property within the borough, the work to be completed by Ist November next." It was resolved that the Government be written to for a return of reserves in the borough, and alio of the purposes forwhioh they were reserved. On the motion of Cr. Williamson, seconded by Or. Campbell, it was resolved—" That a tracing be obtained of the railway reserve between Tinwald and Rangitata, to be forwarded to Government, asking them to reserve 2000 acres for the borough." The question of a seal for the Council was deferred till next meeting. It was resolved to telegraph to the Colonial Secretary, asking for an extension of time for the election of three councillors, which.should be held on the 12th inetanfc. Cr. Williamson moved, and Cr. Roberts seconded—"That a man be ap pointed to look after culverts and side channels, and do other necessary work." Ifc was resolved to invite applications for the office of town clerk, salary £100 per annum, applications to be sent to the town clerk's office by noon on 23rd instant. It was resolved that the Council meet at 7 p.m. on each alternate Monday, and that the next meeting be held at the town clerk's office.
