Cr. Brown ■ said he would more that the committee already appointed be empowered to act, and to obtain apiece of the land from MrHarman, the price not to exceed £150. Eβ had looked fully into the matter, and his own opinion was that it would be better to tsie a piece of MrHarman "s land than that of $£r Bishop. ' Some ducoteicm took place on the question of the land of Mr Bishop, and it was stated that he had a portion of the public road fenced in Sβ hie own property. The motion was pat and loat. Cr. Jones said if the City Council had the control of the channel in jj|neition it was *nly right they should pay for keepfcsg it dear. * ■ ■ :
Cr. Brown thought it was quite lam* that] the matter of the South belt if*■ put right. | Hβ was tony now that be had not complained before he paid his rates. The Major did not see why that body had tSjlight Ujg*% to |»y this earn* but perhaps morally they ought to do so. Up to the 'fisse <*f the"formation of this borough, the City Council had kept the channel in question ..-■dear, without asking the Spreydon Road Boud for a penny piece for doing so. The channel in question waa now getting worse *ad worse, and the question was what stepe *»d better be taken. Cr. Brown ~iai&, if it wrs out of their district, it ws» quite dear that they ought not to fee called upon to pay. His Worship and Cr. Whitelaw were appointed to form the deputation. Cr. Buxion brought up the subject of lighting the Colombo ro*d with gas, and said it would be very desirable to do so as early as possible. The following resolution was agreed to unanimoi >'y—" That the photographs of the Mayor, the councillors, and town clerk be taken, to be hung up in the hall, at their joint expense." The Mayor stated that the 30th. instant would be the anniversary of proclaiming the district a borough. He would take any suggestions from the Council as to celebrating the occasion or not. He thought they should give the employee a treat of some kind, the expense to be borne jointly by the Mayor and councillors.
Cr. did not see it was quite a right thing to give this treat—though he Hked treats as a rule. It was an honorable thing to be a councillor, and also to bear such expenses as those which would be entailed if the Mayor's suggestion be acted upon. He would snggest that they give the employes a holiday and let it rest there. It was not the expense he looked at, but it was the sort of thing he had not heard of before.
Cr. Charters proposed—" That the Council give their employee a dinner on the 20th icstant, to commemorate the proclamation of the borough, the expenses to be borre by the Mayor and councillors." His- Worship—But no champagne. The motion was seconded by Cr. Vennall. Cr. Charters and the town clerk were appointed to make the necessary arrangements. This was all the business, and the Council adjourned.
