MAGISTRATES' COURT.
CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, December 22. (Before J. Ollivier and A. Lean, Esq's J.P.'s.) Drunkenness.—George William Pickeriing, charged with being drunk, and dis- ' orderly, was fined 203, having seven previous convictions against him. Forgery and Uttering.—John William Tarrant was charged with having forged and uttered a cheque for £14 7s Gd, purporting to be drawn by William Langdown on the Bank of Australasia. Inspector Feast stated that he arrested the prisoner last night in Lyttelton, and as the witnesses were at Sumner, he prayed for a remand until Friday. The Bench gilanted the remand as prayed for. Larceny as a Bailee. —Edward M'Kenna was brought up on remand charged with larceny as a bailee, and further remanded until to-morrow at Kaiapoi. Larceny.—Charles Sydney Pocock was brought up on remand, charged with larceny. The robbery took place at a house of illfame in Colombo street, and prisoner, on being arrested, had a suit of clothes, a pair of boots, and a watch-guard, which the prosecutor identified as his property. The prisoner made no defence. Inspector Feast said that the prisoner had lately come down from Hokitika, where he had a very bad character. The Bench sentenced him to three months' imprisonment with hard labour. Wife Desertion.—Arthur Edward Upjohn appeared on remand, charged with deserting his wife Josephine Up John. As the prisoner was in custody on a charge of bigamy, he was remanded to the 29th inst. Larceny. —Flora Mary Chaundy was charged with stealing blankets, the property [ of Elizabeth Fuchs, of the Wellington hotel. It appeared that the prisoner, who had been staying at the Wellington Hotel, had taken the blankets, and pawned one and sold the other. The prisoner said she did not intend to steal the property, and one of the blankets belonged to herself. The Bench sentenced the prisoner to seven days' imprisonment with hard labour.
