BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Wednesday, January 28. The Board held its usual weekly meeting, yesterday, at 3 p.m. Present—Messrs C. C. Bowen (chairman), Gould, J. N. Tosswill, Kennaway, and Montgomery. EAST CHRIBTCHURCH. A deputation, consisting of the BevH. C. Watson and Messrs Wynn Williams and R. D. Thomas, had an interview with the Board relative to various matters. They urged very strongly upon the Board the necessity of purchasing Mr Denham's tbree-quarter-acre section as an additional site for the school, which, with the large number of children, was an urgent neces»ity. The cottages upon the land have very good buildings, and might be used as lodgings for two teachers, whereby they would save nearly £100a-year. After some further discassion, the Board agreed to authorise the purchase of the site for the sum of £13Q0, the district to contribute one-sixth of the cost. The Board agreed to sanction thje renting of a small chapel at Avonside as a temporary school in (that district. PAREORA. A letter was read from Mr jQhisholm, who had been appointed to report upon the cite for the Pareora school. - A lengthy correspondence from residents in the district! on the question wae also read, as also » petition asking the Board to have the school erected on the old site. After some discassion the Board agreed to confirm the choice of the site already recommended by the Board to the Government as requested by the local committee. PUBAU. A letter wae read from the Rev D. O. Hampton, respecting the establishment of a school at Purau, and asking for information on various points. The number of children in the district was about thirty. A meeting had been held to consider the matter, but no definite result had beeu come to. The letter farther stated that he had the offer of a site

at Port Levy for the establishment of a school there. After some discussion the matter was deferred, in order to allow of the chairman paying a personal visit to Port Levy and Parian. 1.8 BON'S BAT. A letter was read from three late members of the local committee, calling attention to the loose manner in which the business of the local committee was carried out. The secretary was instructed to forward a copy of the letter to the chairman of the committee, and enquiring whether the accounts were duly audited at the annual meeting in October, and if the places of the committee men, who had resigned, had been filled up. EAST CHRISTCHCBCH. A letter was read from the local committee respecting the side school in Barbadoes street, in which it was stated that fresh plane would be callad for. The Board decided to eanction this course. COLOMBO EOAD. A letter was read from the chairman of the local committee, asking the Board to allow a sum of £12 per annum to the Colombo road echool committee for clerioal assistance when required. The Board resolved to accede to the request. LEESTON. A letter was read from Mr Marshall, forwarding tracing of proposed new district to be called Lakeside, together with notes of meeting held to further the object. The number of children over five years of age J was stated at 25. The residents, therefore, desired to be formed into an educational district under the Act. The secretary was instructed to forward a tracing of the proposed Lakeside district to the Leeston local committee, asking them whether they had any other suggestion. The secretary was also instructed to reply to the Lakeside petitioners that the Board was favorably disposed as to their application, and that the tracing had been referred to the Leeston local committee. IRWELL. The Board decided to recommend the Government to proclaim the district under the Act as follows:-—Bounded on north by the Selwyn, east by Lake Bllesmere, on the west by the Racecourse and Southbridge railway, and en the south by the Leeston district. The Board also decided to request the Government to ire-proclaim the South Selwyn educational district with the same boundaries as before except that the eastern boundary should be the Raoecourse and Southbridge railway instead of the Christchurch and Leeston road. WOODEND. A letter was read from the chairman of the local committee stating that Mr Stewart, the master, had sent in his resignation. The Board decided to approve of the committee advertising for a master. OXFORD WEST. A letter was read from the chairman of the local committee, forwarding tenders from Mr Carter for £360, and Messrs Godfrey and Goodland for £380. The secretary was instructed to write, and ask the committee which tender they would recommend for acceptance. ■ UPPER HEATHCOTE. ' A request was received from this school for a mistress. * ; The Board decided to grant the request for the appointment of an assistant mistress at £50 per annum, who could also teach sewing. .......... SOUTHBRIDGE. A letter was read from the chairman of the local committee, forwarding tenders for alterations and additions to the schoolroom, and forwarding plana of same. The Board decided to suggest to the committee that the addition be placed transversely to the present building, as a room 60 x 18 would be disproportionate and weak of structure. The Board would find fivesixths of the necessary cost. - After some further routine business, the Board adjourned at six p.m. to Monday next.
