Spinning and Weaving Company.—An extraordinary general meeting of the shareholders in this company will be held at Speneley's Hall, at 3 p.m this day, to consider the present position and prospects of the company, and to consider a resolution as required by the memorandum of association, that the company undertake and cai*ry on the manufacture of woollen goods, and that the directors be empowered to take all necessary steps for that purpose. Aquatics.—lt is more than probable that the first of a series of bumping races under the auspices of the U.C.B. Club will started on Saturday next. Arrangements are in course of completion with a view to this being done. Sundat School Union. — We remind members of the Canterbury Sunday School Union that the annual meeting will take place this evening at the Congregational Church, Manchester street. Wesleyan Conference. —The first New Zealand-Conference in connection with the Australasian Wesley an Methodist Connexion was opened yesterday at the Durham street church, when there was a full attendance of ministers representing the several circuits and districts. The Conference conferred the distinguished honor of being the first President upon the Rev Thomas Buddie, one of the oldest Wealeyan ministers as regards length of service in the colonies. The Southern ministers arrived yesterday from Dunedin. The session will be resumed to-day. ACCIDKNT IN LYTTELTON HARBOR.— After*some grappling the boat belonging to the ship Pleiades was recovered, andbrougLt up to the breakwater and bailed out. Nothing has been heard of the body of the lad Banks. Oddfellows' and Foresters' Picnic. — It may be in the recollection of our readers that on Boxing Day, December 26th, the members of the above lodges determined to have a picnic at Rangiora, and which passed off with success. Mr H. R. Webb, chairman of the Lyttelton educational school committee has requested us to acknowledge £2 Is Id from the above societies, to be devoted to the children's treat in February next. Wesleyan Home Missions.—The annual soiree in aid of the funds of the Home Mission will take place at the Durham street schoolroom this evening. Tea will be served at 6 p.m., after which a public meeting will be held, when addresses will be delivered by the Rev T. Buddie, President of the Conference, and several other ministers attending the New Zealand Conference. Typographical Association. —A special general meeting of the members of the Canterbury Typographical Association will be held at the Clarendon Hotel, on Saturday, at 7 p.m. Public Health Act.—We call attention .to a notice emanating from the City Council, as a Local Board of Health, which appears in our advertising columns. News —The cost of maintaining; the Provincial Government of Canterbury nmst rather astonish people outside the province. A telegram from the Christchurch agent of the Anglo-Australian Press Association, which appears in the Otago papers, says that " the total sum expended, during the session exceeded £1,000,000." Good Templabism in Christchurch.— The requisite charter having been signed, Bro Andrews, G.D.R.W.G.T., instituted a new lodge in the Temperance Hall last evening, when thirteen members were admitted by clearance card and two initiated; after which, the following officers were elected for the ensuing quarter :■ —Bro Emerson Clarkson, W.C.T.; Sister Mary Caygill, W.V.T.; Bro W. Charters, W.S. ; Charles Bush, W.F.B. ;• Bro John Caygill, W.T. ; Bro Aulsebrpok, W. Chaplain ; James Mulloney; W.M.; David Steel, W.I.G. It was resolved that the name of the lodge should be the Ever Faithful, and the installation of officers and consideration of the bye-laws was postponed till next Wednesday, The lodge then closed with the usual ceremonies. Drapers' and Clothiers' Association. —Tbe usual monthly general meeting of this association will be held to-morrow evening, at the Oddfellows'Halli Fine Arts. —The prizes won in Mr Hoyte , art union have been framed, and will be on view for a few days at Mr H. Fisher's, Hereford street. They, are well worth a visit, as though looking exceedingly well unframed the artistic touches of coloring, &c, are fully brought out by the handsome frames in which they have been placed. Canterbury College.—A meeting of the Governors of the Canterbury College will take place this afternoon at 2 p.m, as the Literary Institute. * > Kaiapoi Institute.—The monthly meeting of the committee takes place this evening. As there is much important business it is expected that there will be a full attendance. Kaiapoi Brass Band.—A considerable number of tickets have been sold for the ball under the auspices of the Loyal Kaiapoi Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., in aid of the funds of the brass band, to be held at the Institute hall on Friday evening. The band have been assiduously practising the music for the occasion, and the affair it is hoped will result in increasing their finances. Theatre Royal.—The " Heart of MidLothian '* was repeated last evening at the Theatre Royal to a very good house. All the parts were well filled, and the play went capitally. To-night the musical play of " Guy Mannering " will be produced. Queen's Variety Troupe.—The Variety Troupe gave another of their performances last evening at the Music Hall, when the programme was gone through satisfactorily. To-night Miss Lizzie Watson and Mr Harry Braham take their benefit, being the last appearance of the tronpe here. For this occasion a monster programme has been prepared, the present company having been strengthened by additional talent, added to which the burlesque of " Pygmalion and Galatea " is in itself no mean attraction.
