Tuesday, Apbil 8. I [Before W. H. Pilliet, R.M.Q V Vagbants' Act.—D.' B. Barclay was' charged with having obtained several sums of money from the Rev W. Aylmer and others in July last, under ialse pretencps. The Rev Wm. Aylmer. C. L. Wiggins',' M'Gregor, J. D. Garwood, R. Noonan, and R. Townsend were examined, and gave evidence to the effect that during the monthß of July and August last the prisoner had obtained several sums of money from a committee formed for the purpose of obtaining the services of a duly qualified medical practitioner, by falsely representing to the committee, of which the Rev W. Aylmer was chairman, that he had the necessary qualifications with him, and his diplomas then lying in the hands of the Registrar at Christchurch (Dr Parkerson), for the purpose of registration. Sergeant Ramsay deposed that the accused -had been living in a state of vagrancy for a considerable period ; had been prosecuted for obtaining goods from a jeweller at Hokitika under false pretences ; for larceny as a bailee; and for manslaughter while acting as a medical man. The Bench said that while the numerous victims of prisoner's malpractice could not be held blameless for their want of common prudence in believing and trusting him, as the evidence disclosed they must have done, his career of swindling should, if possible, be put a" stop 'to.j|»Sentenced to nine months' imprisonment, with hard labor.
