LEESTON.
(Friday, February 14. [Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M., E. J. Lee, Esq., E, Jollie, Esq., Dr. Christy, J.P's.] Violent Assault—James Swinbourn was brought up in custody of Sergeant Barlow, charged on the information of his wife, Jane Swinbourn,' with the above offence. Complainant stated she had been .very cruelly treated by defendant for some time past, and he had been more violent of late and given to drinking hard. On the night of the 13th inst. defendaut. beat her and turned her out of doors, and she was iii bodily fear of defendant. The Bench ordered defendant to find sureties to keep the peace, himself in £100, and two sureties in £50 each. Defendant refused to find sureties. Warrant issued in default, and defendant was locked up. Civil Cases—J. Gilmour vH. Chamberlain, claim, £71 ss. Mr Thomas for plaintiff. Defendant paid into Court £74 3s Id, giving plaintiff no notice. Judgment for £3 3s professional fee ; expenses 8s and two witnesses 10s each.
