SAGACITY.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —I admire the business habits of our present Government as regards Keetley's case at Kaiapoi. The best route for the railway through Kaiapoi was through Keetley's property, but Keetley valued his whole property at £400. The Government, to save this sum, made a curve round Kectley's, but saved only a small portion of the sum. I say only a small portion because they still had to pay for the curved route, which will cause as much delay and wear and tear to the rolling stock as the whole amount that Keetley wanted for compensation. But that is not the greatest blunder. Our Government were so sagacious as to form the curve so as to spoil Keetley's businrss site, and the result is that by law Keetley has got an award of, I think (including expenses), some £600. But the Government may think themselves lucky if £1000 clears them. Yours, &c, Engineer.
