Mr J. Horse has resigned his seat in the Kaiapoi Borough Council, so that there are now two vacancies ; there is also a rumoured probability of a third vacancy.
The members of the Lyttelton Choral Class will meet for practice this evening, at the Colonists' Hall. It is to be hoped there will be a full attendance of members.
A memorandum courteously forwarded by the Chief Postmaster informs us that the s.s. Wellington will leave Lyttelton carrying the outwards San Francisco mails, on Saturday the 11th. Mails close at 8.30 a.m.
Messrs Miles and Co have received a tele" gram from Messrs Henderson and Macfarlaneof Auckland, stating that they are endeavoring to charter the City of Adelaide for Honolulu, but close till her arrival ; also, instructing them to forward mails and passengers by the s.s. Wellington, leaving Lyttelton on the 11th May.
The services at Trinity Church, Avonside, this day, will be full choral. Morning Prayers begin at half-past ten o'clock, and the Holy Communion service at eleven o'clock. In the evening the service is to begin at seven. The Her. Mr Cooper is to conduct all the services, and we understand is to preach on the subject of " Ritualism " in the evening. A notice in to-day's issue informs the public that the Resident Magistrate's Courts in the- northern districts for the hearing of civil cases, will in future be held at Kaiapoi on Monday, Eangiora alternate Tuesdays, Oxford every fourth Wednesday, and no alteration, has been made at Leiihfie,ld or Waiau,
To-day being Holy Thursday and the day appointed by his Excellency the Governor for t!tenksgivy% for the recovery of H.R.H. thePriiiee of Wales, there will be special services at the Church of St. Michael's and All Angels, as follows :at 8.30 a.m. morning prayer and an address to the Volunteers, by the Reverend W. J. G. Bluett, Chaplain to the Forces. At 11.30 the Right Rev. the Primate will .idminister the rite of confirmation, and there will be a celebration of the Holy Communion. We understand that there are about thirty candidates for confirmation. In the evening, at 7.30, there will be evening prayer, and a sermon by the Very Rev. the Dean of Christchurch on the subject of the Visitation and Communion of the Sick. There will be special collections at all the services in aid of the fund for providing furniture and fittings for the new church.
The committee of the Rangiora Literary Institute held their usual monthly meeting in the reading room on Tuesday evening, when the following members were present, viz., Messrs. Cunningham (chairman), Blackett, Merton, Johnston, Hunnibell, Thome, Keir, Truman, and E. R. Good. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. It was decided to lodge £200 in the Post-office Savings' Bank in the names of the Chairman,-Treasurer, and Secretary, and that Mr Biackett be requested to give the necessary notice to the Government, and it was agreed that an account for the ordinary expenditure be opened with the Bank of New Zealand, Kaiapoi, cheques to be signed by the chairman, treasurer, and secretary. Messrs Cunningham and Blackett were appointed to make arrangements with Mr Jones with reference to the completion of the purchase of the section of land decided to be bought of him, and to report at the next meeting. Several accounts were passed for payment, and after a vote of thanks to the chairman the meeting adjourned until the 21st inst.
