ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

A special meeting of the council of the Acclimatisation Society was held yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs. Blakiston (in the chair), S. Bealey, Boys, Broadfoot, Jameson, J. A. Bird, Carrick, Fereday, Carruthers, Fair (hon. sec), and Johnson, (curator), A letter was read from Mr Graf, of Wellington, stating that he had succeeded in importing two pairs of grouse after considerable difficulty, and asking the society if they required one pair, and what price they would be prepared to pay for the same. The Secretary was instructed to reply, acknowledging the receipt of the letter. The council then proceeded to discuss the list of birds, &c, to be sent for to England by Mr Bills, when the following were agreed to be sent for:—4o hares (mixed sexes), 50 pairs partridges, 20 pairs rooks, 20 pairs plover, 20 pairs lapwings, 4 pairs widgeon, 2 pairs English duck and mallard, 10 pairs robins, 9 dozen yellowhammers, 6 dozen goldfinches, 6 dozen hedgesparrows, 6 dozen tomtits (large), 6 dozen wheatears, 3 dozen blackbirds (chiefly hens), 3 dozen thrushes, 3 dozen water wagtails, 3 dozen bramble finches. With respect to the importation of lobsters, crabs, and oysters, it was resolved that the hon. sec. write to Captain Fox of the Charlotte Gladstone, asking him to favor the society by taking charge of a consignment of the above. Mr Fereday moved —" That the Provincial Government be respectfully requested to place upon the estimates the sum of £500 for the of assisting the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society in bringing out a further shipment of birds and animals." Mr Carrick seconded the motion, which was agreed to. j The following gentlemen were appointed as a deputation to wait on the Government to urge the request — Messrs Broadfoot, Bowen, Blakiston, and Fereday. The meeting then adjourned.
