ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST SCHOOL.

The distribution of prizes won at Christmas, 1871, at the above school, took place at $c schoolroom last evening. The incumtent of the parish, the Rev. E. Bailey, occupied the chair, and there were also present a number of ladies and gentlemen friends and parents of the children, including His Worship the Mayor and Mrs Sawtell. - Theßev. Chairman said that the prizes they had that evening to distribute were by far the most valuable ever given at that school, or indeed in any school in the city, and should prove as an incentive to the scholars to persevere in their studies. They had that evening amongst, them His Worship the Mayor of Christchurch, who had kindly consented to present the prizes to them, and 'he felt sure all of the boys and girls present - would feel it a high honor that His Worship had conferred upon them, .:.; The delay which had taken place in the presentation of the prizes had arisen from causes over which the school committeehad no con- ■ • kol, but be trusted the very handsome books they had before them would amply compensate for that delay. He would now ask 3 Ms Worship the Mayor to say a few words to them. His Worship the Mayor said he felt very much gratified at the kind invitation he had received from the rev. chairman to be present with them that evening, and it gave him the greatest pleasure to perform the pleasing duty devolving upon him of presenting the prizes. He would take this opportunity of urging upon all the scholars the necessity of unremitting diligence .in their studies, and implicit obedience to the instructions of their ■ teachers. By so doing, not only would they reap substantial rewards for themselves at that present time, but they •ffonld also be fitting themselves to occupy, with credit alike to themselves and their teachers, any position it might be iheirlot to be called upon to occupy. In new countries such as this, a career was open to all who, by dint of patient application and attention to study, chose to avail themselves of the opportunity afforded to them, tod he wished particularly to impress upon them the necessity of applying themselves both in schools hours and out of them, to the acquisition of knowledge, which would be of incalculable advantage to them in their progress through life. His Worship then proceeded to distribute the prizes, as follows, accompanying each piae with a few kindly words :— girls.

J At the conclusion of the prize distribution Mr Graham addressed a few words to the children, urging them to preserve the prizes won by them as mementos of their school career. The Rev. Chairman then called upon the children to give three hearty cheers for Miss Anthony and Mr Dunnett, the mistress and master of the school, remarking that the school committee and himself entertained the highest possible opinion of the efficiency and assiduity displayed by them during the year, and also by Master Thomas Gates, the pupil teacher. These were heartily given, and a similar compliment was paid to his Worship the Mayor and Mrs Sawtell, the ladies giving prizes, and the Rev. E. Bailey, after which the Evening Hymn was sung, and the proceedings terminated by the Rev. E. Bailey pronouncing the Benediction.
