Cheistchuech, September 23. (Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness and Indecency — John Hoarn and Margaret Dempsey were discharged with a caution. Deunk and Disobdeely.—Jameß Ryan was fined 10s. Laeceny.—Charles Drain alius Edwards was brought up on remand from the 22nd instant, charged with stealing a shirt, the property of John Downs. When his case was last before the Court Detective Feast had proved the finding of the shirt produced in prisoner's swag. He arrested him on the charge of having stolen his shirt from Lodge's about seven weeks ago. Tho prosecutor, John Downs, who occupied th« same room with prisoner, had identified the shirt produced to be hig property. Prisoner left Lodge's on Wednesday morning, and after he had gone, witness examined his swag, which was rolled up under his bed and missed the shirt in question. He found an old shirt on his swag. The prisoner denied having stolen his shirt, and alleged that he had purchased it with the one he had on at Black's, at the corner of Lichfield and High streets. His Worship remanded the prisoner till] to-day for the production of additional, evidence. George Edward Ohitty, shopman at Mr Black's, was now called, and deposed that for the last three months they had not had in stock shirts of the pattern like the one produced. John Tetley, in whose employ the prisoner had been, stated that he had never seen prisoner wearing the shirt produced. Margaret Phelan, a servant at Lodge's, said she had never seen the prisoner wearing a shirt like the one produced. He left an old shirt behind him when he went away. The prisoner was convicted and sentenced to two months' imprisonment, with hard labor. Lyttelton—September 23. [Before W. Donald, Esq., R M.] Deunk and Incapable—George Clark alias Rtx, an old offender, was charged with being drunk and incapable, but on his promising to leave the town immediately his Worship dismissed him, cautioning him that if he appeared before him again for drunkenness, he would sentence him to six months' imprisonment as a vagrant.
