NEWS OF THE DAY.
The opening football match of the season will be played to-day on Latimer square, commencing at 2p m. Tin Sides will be North v South, tho river being the boundary. The second of Mr Cotterell's entertainments last evening attracted a crowded and fashionable audience, and the various characters in the programme were impersonated in a most mirth-provoking manner. There was a fair house at the Theatre Royal last evening, when the programme of the preceding evening was repeated. This evening I "The Lonely Man of the Ocean" will bo j produced, followed by the burlesque of " Orpheus and Eurydice" for the last time. To-morrow the anniversary sermons will be preached in connection with the Wesleyan Sabbath school, Durham street. In the afternoon an address will be delivered to the scholars by the Rev. A. Reid. Selections of sacred mueio will be given by the ohildren, and will no doubt be beautifully eiecuted, as they have been in training for a considerable time by Mr Spensley. A meeting of the electors of the Heathcote district, called by Mr Rolleston, was held last evening in the store on the Christchurch Quay, which had been fitted np for the occasion. There was a large attendance. Mr Rolleston addressed the meeting at considerable length, giving in the main the same explanations as at previous meetings. At the conclusion a vote of confidence in Mr Rolleston was carried with acclamation. We are compelled from want of space to withhold a more lengthened report. On Thursday, 21st instant, a bazaar was held at the girls' schoolroom, Rangiora, in aid of the Sunday and day schools. The net proceeds were £28 ss. Further contributions will be thankfully received by the incumbent, chairman of the committee for the above object. The anniversary of the Baptist Church, Lichfield street, Christchurch, was celebrated by a public tea meeting on Good Friday, the 15th, at which about 100 persons were present. After tea the meeting was addressed by ministers and friends of the cause. The financial report, given verbally by the Treasurer, was highly satisfactory, there being no liabilities, with the exception of a small mortgage of £320 on the land. An accident, unfortunately attended with fatal results, occurred yesterday at Bam on board the barque Union, while discharging her cargo of coals alongside the screw-pile jetty in Lyttelton. One of the coal-buckets became entangled in the rigging, and capsized, when part of the contents fell on the head and chest of a sailor named William Taylor, of Norfolk. Instantaneous death was the result. The body was removed to the Canterbury Hotel, j to await the coroner's inquest. ! The " Gazette " of yesterday contains the traffic returns of the Canterbury Railways for the months of February and March. The receipts for the month of February on the Lyttelton and Christchurch line were £2263 3s 9d, as compared with £2266 19s 2d for the corresponding month of 1869. On the Great South line the receipts were £1345 Os Id, as compared with £1424 8s 9d for tho corresponding month of 1869. For the month of March the receipts on the Lyttelton and Christchurch line were £5039 13s lid, as j compared with £3072 7s 3d for the corres- j ponding month of 18t>9. On the Great South line the receipts were £3122 Os 3d, as com- i pared with £2515 7s 8d for the corresponding month of 1869. In March, 13,148 passengers passed over the Lyttelton and Christchurch line; and 180,360 bushels of wheat, 67,314 do oats, 2129} bales wool were carried over the line.
