Wellington, April 22, 7 45 p m. The amended tenders for tho purchase of the Steam Company's plant have been opened. Only two tenders for whole service—one from the Circular Saw Company, and one from the proposed new company. Both were rejected, being below the liquidators' limit. Mr Krull's tender of £850 for the Ladybird was accepted. The remainder will be sold by auction. A small parcel of quartz from Baker's Hill, Karori, yielded Sozs sdwts to the ton. A numerously signed requisition has been addressed to the Deputy-Superintendent, requesting him to convene a public meeting for the purpose of raking steps towards promoting permanent communication between Melbourne and San Francisco, calling at Wellington and Honolulu. Nothing further of importance. Mr McKenzie has entered into a contract for tho construction of a telegraph between 'Tauranga and Taupo, to be completed in three months. A farewell service was given to the Rev D. Bruce, last evening, when £100 was presented to him. He leaves for London, per the Annie Main, on a twelvemonth visit. Colonel Harrington and the volunteers who are to compete for the colonial prizes at Dunedin are passengers per the Phoebe to-day. A man named William Hammond died suddenly yesterday, and at the inquest a verdict of death from excessive drinking was returned. Lieut.-Colonel Mould takes charge at Tauranga. A farewell dinner was given to him at Hamilton, and a gold watch, chain, and locket, were presented to him by the men of the Armed Constabulary. Nelson, April 22,3.3 p m. Arrived—Lord Ashley from Taranaki; Beautiful Star from Wellington. Messrs Carrington, Sewell, and Cathew are candidates for the Omata district. The " Herald " opposes Mr Sewell.
