RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Chbistchitech--March 25. [Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M.] DBUNK AND INCAPABLE. William Russell and Edward Cooper were brought up charged with the above offence, and discharged with a caution. CATTIE TBESPASS. Charles Allison, John Horler, James McKenzie, William Wilson, Samuel Stewart, and John Vavaseur, were fined 5s each for the above offence. BREACHES OP THE CITY BYE-X.AWS. Walter Hartnell was charged with leaving his cab unattended in a public thoroughfare, to wit Oxford terrace. . Constable Jefferey proved to seeing the cab standing outside a brothel for ten minutes, and upon going insido he found the defendant having dinner. Defendant denied that it was a public thoroughfare where he left the cab, but the Bench considered the. offence proved, and inflicted a fine of 10s. Christopher Dalwood was fined 10s for carrying luggage in his cab without being licensed for that purpose. Henry Rangecroft was fined 10s for a similar offence. Another charge against the above defendant for obstructing the thoroughfare was proved, and a fine of 10s was inflicted. DOG NUISANCE OBDINANCB. R. J. Pearce and Charlotte Louder were fined £1 each under the above Ordinance for being the owners of unregistered dogs. POLICE OBDINANCE. Richard Fluit and Richard Brunsden were fined 10s each for leaving their vehicles unattended in the public streets as not to have command over the horses. Three boys named Elliott, Hill; and Thompson, were charged with wilfully setting fire to J grass within the limits of the town. The Bench considered the case proved, but in consideration of their youth, the defendants were dismissed with a caution. George Partby and James Mazey were charged with obstructing the police in the execution of their duty. From the evidence it appeared that a fight was going on in Barnard's yard, and upon the police going to interfere, the defendants obstructed them until the combatants had got away. Defendants admitted the charge, and were fined £5. Patrick Ryan, Michael Ryan, and Stephen Ryan were charged with violently assaulting Francis McGuire, at Weedon's Hotel, on the evening of the 17th instant. Mr Slater ap« peared for the complainant. After hearing the evidence of several witnesses, the_ Resident Magistrate* remarked that as there had been considerable expenses paid in this case, £3 6s 2d, he would order that both the complainant and defendant should pay half, and cautioned all parties as to the way in which they showed respect for St. Patrick's Day in future. 5 Andrew McTaggart was fined 20s for using i abusive language towards Thomas C. Mulh'ns. Peter McAra was charged with assaulting S. A. Bell. Mr Garrick appeared for the defendant, and admitted the offence, but pleaded great provocation. A fine of £1 was inflioted. CIVIL CASBS. Louisson and Luekie v. Harding—ln this 1 case, which wa« partly heard yesterday, several
more witnesses were examined, and from their evidenco it appeared that the books of the estate had been tampered with while in the htinda of Mr Louisson unci Simpson. Judg. ment was given for defendant, with costs. Plaintiffs to pay £16 ss, defendant's travelling expenses from Auckland. Bowen, Esq., R.M.] DBFNKENNESS. Alfred Bowman was fined 10a for being drunk and incapable in Christchurch. George William Pickering was fined 20s for being drunk and disorderly in front of the City Hotel. I IAROENY. John Eobson was brought up in custody, charged with stealing cix £l-notes from the person of Charles Roberts, who, upon being sworn, stated—l am a laborer living fit. the Kowai Pass. I went to the City Hotel last night. I saw prisoner there about half-an-hour after I went in. I entered into conversation with him. He told mc he was hard up, and I agreed to share my money with him and another man named Fred. Norman. I showed him the money, it consisted of six £l-notes. I put the money, rolled up in a letter, in my right hand breaet pocket in my coat. Wβ came outside, and went along until we got to a bridge. Prisoner had mc by the right arm and Norman had mc by the left. When we got to the bridge prisoner hung behind and his mate said, what are you doing? He anewered that he was fond of reading by moonlight, and that he was reading a book. I looked round, and saw that he had a small of writing paper in his hand. I put my hand in my pocket, and missed, my ; money. I said to prisoner, " You are no man ; you have robbed mc." When I said that ho tore up the paper which he had in his hand. He denied having the money, and threatened to beat mc. Wβ afterwards went near a house, and prisoner eat down on the bank. He had his hands under his legs. When he got tip prisoner said to the other man, " Here, take his arm, and share the note between us so as to make it up. Norman \ asked prisoner to give the money up. Prisoner replied that he had notf got it, and afterwards said he had put it in Norman's pocket. Norman examined hie pocket, but it could not be found. Frederick Norman was also examined, and gave oorroboiative evidence. Police-sergeant Pardy was also examined. Upon the application of the police, the prisoner was remanded to the 29th instant. ;
