The Suez Mail.—The letters by the English mail, of the 29th January, which arrived at Hokitika on Thursday afternoon, reached Christchurch on Saturday afternoon. The mail arrived in Melbourne one day late. Fibe at Leßon's Bay. — About three o'clock on the morning of Friday, the 19th instant, a fire broke out in Mr J. Dalgleish's steam saw mills,. Leßon's Bay.. The mill was burnt to the ground; the only thing saved being the engine. Mr Dalgleish, whose lobs is estimated at some £200, was uninsured. The cause of the fire is unknown. Inquest*—An inquest was held on Saturday morning at the Britannia hotel) Lincoln road, before Dr Coward, coroner, on view oi the body of Bobert Dean, who was found dead m his bed on Thursday morning. It appeared from the evidence that deceased had fallen from a dray on the 20th inst., and after hearing the evidence of Dr Patrick, who made a post mortem examination of the body, the jury returned a verdict—" That deceased died from congestion of the brain caused by falling from a dray." The Colonial Bulb Matches.—The firing for the Colonial Government prizes will commence at Pelichet Bay, near Du-.edin, on Friday next, the 2nd instant. It is probable that the Canterbury Volunteers will embark to-day on board the Phcebe; but should it be ascertained in the course of this morning that the Rangitoto will ;positively leave to-morrow they will proceed by that steamer. Aquatics.—No boat racing took place on I Saturday, but some of the members of the R. R. Club and C. H. Club turned out for practice. Tea MEETTNa.—A tea" meeting in aid of the Wesleyan parsonage fund is to take placo. at Rangiora this evening. Ifj.Y.A.—The battery of Lyttelton Volunteer Artillery resumed their shot and shell practice on Saturday afternoon. Some months line elapsed since a shot was Bred, and we are glad to see the battery recommencing their monthly practice. Mandevtixe Wesleyan Chapel—On Good Friday the anniversary tea meeting of this chapel took place. It was more than usually successful. A fine day and a holiday assisted very much to ensure a large attendance of visitors. Tea and its concomitants was provided by some of the ladies in the vicinity, which being over, a publicfmeeting was held, addressed by the Revs J. B. Richardson, W. Keall, and Mr Laurie. Mr J. Wilson occupied the f chair. The proceeds amounted to £9, which Mr Bradley, the treasurer, stated would leave the chapel stewards a balance of £10 10s in hand. A sum of £2 was also collected towards the Circuit Parsonage Fund. Cantebbuby Rifle Association. — The Easter meeting of this association opens this morning. The competitors and other persons engaged in the proceedings will proceed to Hillsborough by the 8 o'clock train; and the firing will begin at 9. The programme for to-day is—Mr Twentyman's prizes of (1) a cup or other article, valued at £4, (2) 10s in money, (3) four small money prizes, for judging distances between 200 and 400 yards: the Horatio Ross prizes, of XI) cup or other article valued at £2 10s, (2) cup or other article valued at £1 10s, (3) six money prizes, for the beet shots at 135 yards range, the competitors between each shot to double round a post 50 yards from the firing point: the Canterbury prizes of cups and money, for the beßt shots at 200 and 300 yds: the Civilian's cup of £3 3s, for the best shots at 200 and 300 yards : the Intercolonial Match among seven representatives each ot England, Ireland, and Scotland, for a cup or other article valued at £1 5s to each representative of the successful squad, ranges 200, 500, and 600 yards: the Company Competition, amongst Canterbury Volunteers, at 150, 250, and 450 yards ranges, for prizes varying in amount according to the number of companies entered. The contest for Mr Twentyman's and the Horatio Ross Prizes will be continued to-morrow, as entries will be accepted up to noon on Tuesday. Entries for all the matches will be made on the ground.
