LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Monday, November 16. Present—The Mayor, Councillors England, Allwright, Willcox, Woledge, Ward, Chalmers, and Hawkins. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The inward and outward correspondence was read. The Work's Committee report was as follows :—The Governor's Bay road, from Lyttelton toßapaki, is completed, as far as the amount granted by the Provincial Government will allow. The following is the work that has been done. The earth slips have been removed, the gutters have been cleaned I out and deepened the whole distance, viz., 165 ! chains ; tKe road has been crowned up in the centre, on an average of one foot the whole distance, excepting where it is rock cutting. The hollow in Corsair Bay has "been filled up three feet ; five additional culverts have been placed at the portions of tbe road that absolutely required them ; a cesspit has been constructed leading into the culvert made by the "Provincial Government near Mr Holmes's property,. five chains of metalling having been done; six men have been employed on the work thirty-five days two hours, and two men thirteen days one hour. The total cost has been—labour, £79 19s 9d ; timber, 700 ft, £3 12s lid; carting, £8 6s 3d; powder and tools, £5 9s; total, £97 7s lid. The committee regret that the amount of the grant was insufficient to metal the road the whole distance, and thus ensure a permanent work, I and also that the finanoial position of the Council does not warrant the committee in requesting a grant from it, but they consider it their duty to state that an additional sum of £65 would make the road in such a condition that very little outlay would be required for years. Tlie committee also beg to state that the foreman, Mr Hodgson, has succeeded in getting a larger quantity of work done for the amount of the grant than they calculated upon. The balance of the grant will be expended in various minor works during the following week. On the motion of Or Ward, seconded by Cr Chalmers, it was resolved that the report should be received. Cr Ward moved that the report should be forwarded to the Government as a voucher for the money spent on the road. The following accounts were passed, and ordered to be paid:—Weekly pay sheet, £15 Is ; Austin's account, £i 16s. The following tenders for lighting the town were opened :—R. Croton, 4d per lamp per night; Wm. Graham, £2 per lump per annum ; Thos. Rogers, £131 18s per annum ; Thomas Btreet, 4d per lamp per night; D. Barret, 12s 6d per night; John Bruce, £100 a year, or £2 12s 8d each ; J. Miller, £2 7s 6d per year; Wm. Higginbottom, 4d per lamp each night, or £3 each per year. Cr Ward moved, and Cr England seconded, that the tender of William Graham be accepted. Carried. Cr Chalmers moved, and Cr England eeconded, that the Council go into committee to consider the tenure of the reserve*.
After a long discussion, in which nearly all] the members spoke, the subject was allowed to drop for the present. An application having b«>en received from T. Rogers for the sum of £5 on account of work done, that amount was passed and ordered to be paid to him. The Council then adjourned.
