CITY COUNCIL.

The following is the report of the City Surveyor, of the works completed in Christchurch under his direction during the past year: — Gentlemen, — I have the honour to lay before you the following report of the various works which have been undertaken and completed during the past year. As I was only a short time in office before the close of last year, I have included the few works that were completed during the last month of the past year. The following is the order in which they were undertaken : — Placing two stone culverts on the Ferry road, in lieu of wooden ones. Sinking three-inch artesian well and erecting sluice-gate in the South drain. Forming Manchester street, from Salisbury street to the North Town belt. Erecting two pumps on the springs in Madras street and Manchester street. Stone channelling in Cal hedral square. Addi ions to the Resident Magistrate's Court, and repainting Council Chamber. Formation of Chester street, from Madras street to the Eaßt Town belt. Metalling Kilmore street, from Oxford terrace to the East Town belt. Repairing Montreal street bridge. Stone channelling Hereford street, from Oxford terrace to Colombo street. Forming and metalling Byergford street,from Madras 6treet to the East Town belt. , Forming and metalling Lichfield street, from Barbadoes street to the East Town belt. Metalling the Papanui road, from the Carlton hotel to Durham street. Carting broken metal; and the following are the streets that received a coating of the same: — Papanui road, from Durham street to Colombo street. Colombo street, from Armagh street to Lichfield street, through Cathedral square. Cashel ctreet, from Oxford terrace to Cobb and Co.'s stables. High street, from Colombo street to Madras street.. , Hereford street, from Colombo street to Oxford terrace. Manchester street, from High street to the South Town belt Tuam Btreet, from Montreal street to Antigua street. Placing two stone culverts, one in Cashel street, and one in Lichfield street at their junction with Madras street. Clearing the River Avon of watercress through the city, from Antigua street to the East Town belt. Placing three cast iron pipe culverts —one in Colombo street near the City hotel, and two jin Cashel street at its junction with Colombo street. Metalling Tuam street, from Barbardoes street to the East Town belt. | Forming and metalling Salisbury street, ■ from Durham street to the Papainui road. Forming and metalling St. Asaph street, from Montreal street to the Lower Lincoln road. Boring five three-inch artesian wells for water supply in Bigh street. Asphalting and stone channelling right-of-way in Lichfield street. Additions to General Post-office in the Market square. Stone tank in front of City hotel. Metalling Barbadoes street, from Cambridge terrace to Church of England cemetery. Forming and metnlling part of North Town belt, from Durham street to the Springfield road. Forming North Town belt; from Colombo street to Durham- street, and fencing centre for Mr Gould to plant. Madras street bridge repaired. Durham street formed, from Tuam street to the South Town belt. Kilmore street partly formed, from Manchester street to Madras street. Fire alarm erected and fenced in. Colombo bridge repaired. Chester street metalled, from Madras street to the East Town belt. Victoria bridge re-aspbalted. In addition to the before-mentioned works I have placed the following pipe culverts in the different streets with the labour gang:— At the intersection of Free's creek and Kilmore street. At the intersectloa of Kilmore street _nd the Papanui road. At the intersection of Antigua. street and St. Asaph street. At the intersection of the Antigua street drain and Tuam street (a double row). , At the intersection of Madras street and High street. At the intersection of Oxford terrace and Worcester street. At the intersection of Hereford street and Oxford terrace. At the intersection of Hereford Btreet and East Town belt. At the intersection of Manchester street and Armagh street. At the intersection of Armagh street and Manchester street., At the intersection of Ferry road below Barbadoes street. At the intersection of Madras street and Chester street. At the intersection of Salisbury street and Barbadoes street., At the intersection of Worcester street on Oxford terrace. At the intersection of Durham street and Salisbury Btreet. At the intersection of St. Asaph street and Antigua street. At the intersection of Antigua street drain in St. Asaph street (double row in lieu of bridge). At the intersection of South Town belt near Antigua street. At the intersection of Tuam street and Antigua street. At the intersection of Manchester street and North Town belt. At the intersection of Durham street and North Town belt.

At the intersection of Colombo street and North Town belt. At the intersection of Montreal street and St. Asaph street. At the intersection of South Town belt and Colombo street. At the intersection of Armagh street and the East Town belt. At the intersection of Chester street and the East Town belt. At the intersection of Tuam street and High street. Besides these pipe culverts there have been several wooden ones placed in such streets as liave too shallow a covering for the pipes. In addition to the abovementioned works that are completed, I have tbe following in hand, viz:— Stone tank in front of Matheson's Agency. Stone channeling, from Lichfield to Cashel street, and from the junction of Lichfield street and High street to Colombo street near the A 1 hotel. Shingling St. Asaph street, from Colombo street to Manchester street. Shingling Tuam street, from Barbadoes street to Madras street. It would be superfluous on my part to laybefore you a list of the requirements of the city for the next twelve months, as so many of the works proposed by the Works Committee remain uncompleted.
