RESIDENT MAGISTRATES' COURTS,
Lyttelton—January 8. [Before Wm. DoDald, Esq., R.M.] Charles Baker was charged with furious riding in a public thoroughfare, endangering the lives of the inhabitants. Sergeant Nyall deposed to seeing Mr Baker, on the 29th December, riding after a bullock along Norwich quay at a furious rate ; shortly after which he returned at the same pace, there being not any beast before him then. Persons lives were in danger. Mr Baker said he was engaged by Mr Cairns to drive a number of beasts, one of which got away, and he rode after to stop it, fearing it would injure somebody, as there were a number of persons standing about. The Bench inflicted the nominal penalty of 2s 6d, and 5s 6d costs. The case Queen y. Cairns was adjourned till to-day. Walker v. Dalton—Claim for goods delivered, £116s. Judgment by default, with 7s costs. Brooke v. Sheppard—£3 Os 6d, balance of account. Judgment by default, with 7s costs. Sponger v. Stanley—This was a claim for one-fourth share of freight by the cutter Sea Shell to the Grey, £67, plaintiff being part owner (one-fourth) of the craft. Plaintiff swore to having applied to defendant for a settlement of the accounts of the vessel, whicli he had not received on the Saturday previous to New Year's Day, being at the time accompanied by a shipping agent. Mr Smiley, clerk to Messrs. Peacock and Co., stated that his employers chartered the vessel in October last for £310, since which time £200 had been paid to Mr Stanley, viz., £100 cash on 4th October,and a bill at three months in December. This was all that had been paid at the office in Lyttelton. The Bench adjourned the case till I Tuesday next, and instructed Mr Stanley to produce all accounts relative to it on that day. Mr Nalder, solicitor, presented a written application for a re-hearing in the case of Hislop v. White, which was granted, Tuesday next being appointed. No appearance was made in the crosssummonses, Stanley v. Harrison and Harrison T. Stanley.
