HAWKE'S BAY.
The " Hawko's Bay Herald " reports for the month as follows :— Business during the month has been quiet but satisfactory ; and is, we believe in a very healthy state. Money is more plentiful than usual at this season of the year. Stocks of provisions are in many items light. Flour is in fully supply, while sugars, teas, and oilman c stores are scarce, and command full rates. Candlee are still only in moderate supply, and as yet this market is scarcely affected by the reduced quotations in other provinces. Advices, however, have been received of large shipments on the way, and prices will then recede. In spirits we report stocks as moderate, with the exception of rum, which has been scarce. Beally good pale brandy is also low in. stock, and is likely, somewhat to advance in price. Bottled ales are still scarce, and first i brands are selling at full rates. The same remark will apply to bottled stout. Ale in bulk is supplied equal to demand. Stout in casks is not to be had. Wβ have had considerable addition to stocks of colonial produce. Large quantities of oats and potatoes have arrived, and other shipments are advised. The arrival of the Leonidae.from Melbourne, has somewhat relieved the market for fencing wire, which has been very scarce and selling at extreme rates. On Saturday last Mr Janisch held a sale of hones at his yards, Spit. The day was remarkably fine, and more than an average number of buyers were in attendance. The stock offered was of rather an inferior description, but the whole was disposed of at satisfactory prices. Good horses seemed in demand. Yesterday, at the Masonic Hall, Messrs Routledge, Kennedy and Co., held an extensive sale of land and property. The attendance was large, and a very sumptuous lunch, served under the superintendence of Mr Eobottom, was provided. Among the sales erfected was the Masonic hotel, subject to the unexpired teim of Mr Gill's lease, which realised £1050. The frontage to Hastings street, in the same sections, brought an average of £6 14s 4d a foot. The frontages to Herschell street, in the same property, averaged £1 10s per foot. The cottage in Herschell street, at present occupied by Mr Robinson, reab'sed £200. Land in Hastings etreet, next to the shop of Messrs Baldwin and Higgins, fetched £3 per foot— the back sections averaging £1 6s. An allotment in Havelock for £29 and other small sales were also effected.
