LYTTELTON MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The Council met on Friday evening at the usual hour. The following members were present: Messrs. Hargreavee (chairman), S. E. Wright, Balestiee, Wilcox, Dransfield, Macpheraon, Meraon and Fyfe. ,The_minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the Chairman announced that Mr. Dransfield had been elected as a member of this Council in the place of Dr. Donald, resigned j and Messrs." Wilcox and Macpherson in the place of Messr3.;Fairhurst and Day. Tho report of the Inspector of Nuisances was read and considered. It referred to the state of the gully running from London street to Norwich quay. The Surveyor suggested that an "invert" should be constructed. , On the nioiaon of Mr. Fyfe, seconded by Mr. Wright, it was resolved—"That a committee be appointed to consider the best method of improving the gußy between the Railway Hotel and Norwich quay, ! and to report on or before 9th June next, to consist of Messrs. Dransfieldj Merson and the mover. The Surveyor's report was then read and considered. Mr. Fyfe said he believed no money had been received on account of the Sumner road this year. There was £500 placed on the Estimates, and the question was how much of that was to be devoted to the Sumner road. It was an understood thing that the Provincial Government found the money and this Qovaacft would repair the road.
Mr. Merson moved:—" That the Clerk apply to the Secretary for Public works for the grant at once." Carried. Mr. Wileox drew the attention of the Council to the state of Norwich quay, at the bottom of the Bridle-path, and wished to know what understanding the Government had come to with Messrs. Holmes and Co. Mr. Wright said the road was in a very bad state, and if nothing was done it would be completely wrtshed away. The road had never been handed orer to them in a proper *fate. Mr. M'Pherson thought that if b simple letter wan sent to rbe Secretary fer Public Works the Government would take the mat fer up. They had done as much on a former occasion, and be believed they would do so now. He thought it very desirable, as the road was very much out of repair. lit was then resolved that the Surveyor bo directed to report on that part of Norwich quay, and his report to be forwarded to the Secretary of Public Works. A letter from Mr. Park was laid upon the table, relative to the water supply. Ho suggested that a tunnel be made in the hill, at the top of Canterbury street, reminding the Council that it was much easier to do that than sink a shaft or bore an artesian welJ. Mr. Wright moved, and Mr. Merson seconded— " That the letter be attached to other documents connected with the water supply." Mr. Fvfe drew the attention of tho Council to the j damage iately done to the drill-shed by the members of the Artillery. Mr. Wright, suggested that the amount of damage be estimated and forwarded to headquarters. It was resolved that the Chairman take immediate action in the matter. Letters from the Hon. J. Hall were read relative to raising money on debentures, but no definite resolution was come to upon them. A letter was read from Messrs. Russell and Co., of Sydney, giving the cost of an engine capable of raising water 150 feet above high water mark —viz., £550. . I The Clerk was directed to acknowledge the receipt of their letter, thanking them for the information. Tenders were opened for lighting the town : —S. Elliott, per lamp, per annum, £8 14s 6d ; Sherratt, do., do., £10 15-3. For making lamps :—E. Billens, per lamp, £2 2s ; J. Piper, do., £1 15s ; J. Beggs, do., £1 14s. Mr. Macpherson moved, and Mr. DrausGeld seconded—•' That the tenders for lamps bo rejected, and fresh tenders be invited for lamps suitable for oil or gae." Carried. Tenders were opened for supplying 500 yards of metal.—Edgar and Co., 7s; Graham and Weyburn, 6s; Chalmers and Co., 4s 6d; Sherratt, 5s 5d : E. Green 7s 6d. The Council accepted Chalmers and Co.'s tender at 4s. 6d. The following accounts were ordered to be paid : — Pay-sheet, £7 16s; Woledge, £3; Derry, £2 8s; E. Mills, £5 3s 6d ; Hewston, 10s. Mr.Urquhart Macphersou gave notice that he should move, on Friday next — " That immediate action be taken for the sale of the various unsold cemeteries of the town, and for the completion of the purchase of the ground for the proposed new general cemetery." The Council then adjourned till Friday next, at the usual hour.
