AUCKLAND.
The Southern Cross, of the 6th instant, has the following report :— The non-arrival of the English mail has tended to check business daring the last week, by the uncertainty in which merchants are left as to the extent of the shipments from England: and there can be no doubt that a better tone -would have prevailed in the market had it been heard that the quantities of English goods shipped had fallen off. Some embarrassment also has resulted from the action recently taken by some of the foreign banks. There has been one large sale of groceries, but the prices realised were low. The stocks of wines and spirits are still large, and these articles are dull of sale, the only exception being brandy (Martell's), which, in consequence of the last Australian advics, has rather improved in price. Oilmen's stores have been selling at rather lower rates. Messrs Eidings and Dowden held a large sale of drapery on Wednesday and Thursday, at which fair prices were obtained, considering that the market is at present well stocked with this kind of goods. There is almost no alteration in the flour market. Stocks are still heavy. Chili is quoted at £24, and Adelaide at £26, trade prices. The wholesale mill price is £27 : retail mill price, £29. 200 tons of wheat and flour have arrived, per Union, from Adelaide. Messrs Harris and Turner held a sale of wines, &c, at their stores to-day. There was a good attendance, but the bidding was somewhat dull.
