March "25th. Present—all the Members. Tho minutes of the previous meeting having been read and continued, Mr. Hargreaves moved and Mr. Peacock seconded that the Council proceed nt once to elect a surveyor, subject to the subsequent approval of tho Provincial Engineer. TlieCn.vir.MAN informed the Council that applications had been received from Messrs. Morey, Miln, Smart, Paddock, and lgglesden.— A ballot then took place, when it was found that all the votes were in favor of the latter gentleman, who was consequently declared duly elected. Mr. Peacock gave notice of a motion that a Street Committee be appointed to direct the hard labor gang, etc., and that a small sum be placed at their disposal for urgent disbursement. Mr. HαluiftKAVEs moved that the various banks be invited to send in tender.-; to the Chairman, stating on what terms they would receive the deposits of the Council. Messrs. Pkacock and Fyfe opposed the motion on the grounds that the Council had by a former resolution agreed that the Bank of New South Wales should be their bankers, and deprecated the shifting of the money to another Bank. Mr. Ayn'slev fully agreed with Mr. Hargreaves that their former vote was only intended to serve a temporary purpose, and thought that as another Bank had since commenced business in the town, it was the duty of the Council to get the best terms they could. Mr. Hakgeaves in reply thought they were quite in order in altering their former decision, as he did not consider the Council jJedgud to any Bank; if any preference wore to be given, the Bank of iSfew Zealand had a just claim to that preference. A division then took place. For the motion—Messrs. Hargreaves, (le.net, Aynsley, Balestiee, Grubb and Wileox. Against—Messrs. Peacock and Fyfe. Majority in favor of the motion, 4. Mr. C-EN'itt' proposed +'iat a town crier be appointed. A conversation ensued, v'A'h induced the mover to withdraw his motion for the present. The Council then adjourned.
